Calgary inks two

The Calgary Flames have signed Matthew Lombardi to a three year deal and inked Marcus Nilson to a two year deal.

This is great news for Flames fans as it looked like management might give up on Lombardi at the end of the playoffs. He has the potential to put up huge numbers and be a number one center.

Nilson will be a third of fourth line winger.

Vancouver signs Pyatt

The Vancouver Canucks have signed Taylor Pyatt to a two year deal worth three million dollars.

This helps his fantasy stock as he could end up playing with the Sedin twins next year. If he does not skate on a line with the twins he should still get plenty of PP time and net some goals. Pyatt could be a 30+ goal scorer next season.

Carolina signs Cam Ward

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed Cam Ward, their number one goal tender, to a three year contract.

This does not make any impact as far as fantasy news, but CAR fans will be happy today.

Atlanta signs Tobias Enström

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed defenseman Tobias Enström to a two year contract.

Enstrom is small in size but has great vision with the puck. Enstrom only stands at 5' 9" and weighs around 175 lbs but
he is not afraid to throw the body. He has good skating and play making ability, vision and shot. He is a potential power play quarterback.

He could step right into the line up next season and see quality time on the PP point. Put this guy on your radar and check for updates before your draft.

Team Cheat Sheet: Nashville Predators

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Nashville Predators:

Arnott, Jason C - Has a good chance to increase all his numbers next season. Decent pick at center for all leagues.

Bonk, Radek C - UPDATE Not much value here, solid match up play only. DND

deVries, Greg D - UPDATE deVries is a solid match up play, but not consistent enough for a full time roster spot. DND

Dumont, J.P. RW - Consistent 20 goal scorer capable of 60-70 points. Few PIMs and few SOG. Mid round to late mid round pick.

Erat, Martin LW - Solid LW that does not score a lot of goals. Decent mid round pick.

Fiddler, Vernon C - Match up play. DND

Gelinas, Martin LW - UPDATE Age and 4th line work have decreased Gelinas's value. He could get better minutes on a depleted NSH roster. He can still score some goals, maybe around 20 next season. Worth a look in deep leagues.

Hamhuis, Dan D - Match up play, could fit on roster in deep leagues.

Hordichuk, Darcy LW - Match up play only. Not played enough to carry in fighter leagues. Still racked 90 PIMs last season but only played in 53 games. Not worth a roster spot. DND

Legwand, David C - Legwand finally broke out last season. Decent option at center. 60-70 point range.

Mason, Chris G - :UPDATE: With the Vokoun trade, Mason will be the #1 next season: Mason will be the number one on a lame duck team next season. NSH should still be a 500 team, so only take him if you are short in net.

Nichol, Scott C - Match up play. DND

Ortmyer, Jed RW - UPDATE Another gritty PIM man on NSH. Match up play only. DND

Radulov, Alexander RW - Great young talent. A must for keeper leagues and should help all leagues next season. Don't be afraid to reach for this guy.

Smithson, Jerred C - Match up play. DND

Sullivan, Steve RW - Always around a PPG guy. Never stays healthy. Gamble pick with big reward.

Suter, Ryan D - If timo leaves his value could increase next season. Keep an eye on him. DND

Tootoo, Jordin RW - PIM player. Match up play or a roster spot in deep PIM leagues taht use fighters.

Weber, Shea D - A great keeper league pick. He is a must in all leagues.

Zanon, Greg D - Not much value, match up play. DND

Zidlicky, Marek D - Weber's arrival hurt Zid's fantasy game and PP time last season. If Timo leaves or they trade Zidlicky look for his numbers to go back up. Great option for managers looking for a point scoring D-man.

That is it for now. Check back for updates as they become available.

Team Cheat Sheet: Atlanta Thrashers

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Atlanta Thrashers:

Boulton, Eric LW - Match up PIM play. DND

Dupuis, Pascal LW - Heavy shot, not many results. DND

Enstrom, Tobias D - :UPDATE: ATL just signed this prospect to a two year deal. Expect him to step right into the line up next season. He has excellent offensive skill and could quarterback the PP. Check back before your draft for updates.

Exelby, Garnet D - Great PIM D-man match up play. DND

Havelid, Niclas D - Gets some points, some PIMs but his overall stats are not draft worthy. DND

Hedberg, Johan G - He can get you some good games. Carry him on your bench if you have room or use for match ups.

Holik, Bobby C - Match up play only. DND

Hossa, Marian RW - All out fantasy stud. Worthy of a 1st round pick.

Klee, Ken D - UPDATE A little long in the tooth, he can still get some good PP numbers. Match up play or bench spot in deep leagues.

Kovalchuk, Ilya LW - Could easily go in round 1 or round 2. As a LW he is very gifted and has improved his +/- each of the last three seasons.

Kozlov, Slava LW - :UPDATE: Re-signed: Has enjoyed playing with Hossa. If he leaves ATL expect a dip in his production. If he stays expect him to keep up similar numbers.

Larsen, Brad LW - Match up play. DND

Lehtonen, Kari G - An inconsistent season could cause him to drop in your draft. If he does snag him. He is a great keeper and a solid fantasy goalie.

Little, Byran C - Explossive offensive talent. Likely will play in the AHL next season, but he could be unreal with Kovy when he gets to the NHL. Farm team must and keeper option if you want to stash him.

MacKenzie, Derek C - Not enough value. DND

MaCarthy, Steve D - :UPDATE: Re-signed:Has the ability on the PP to put up 30-40 points. Yet he just does not seem to get them. Worth a gamble.

Perrin, Eric C - UPDATE Perrin could put up decent numbers if he centers one of the top lines. Check for updates when it gets closer to draft time.

Rucchin, Steve C - Match up play. DND

Slater, Jim C - Has good two way skills and could see more important ice next season. Keep an eye on him. DND

Sterling, Brett LW - Likes to stand by the net and bang home pucks. Has good hands and likes to shoot. He is only 5'7" but he should make the NHL next season. Keep an eye on him. Sleeper pick.

Sutton, Andy D - Match up play. DND

Vigier, J.P. RW - Match up play only. DND

White, Todd C - UPDATE Don't call him Mr. Pink, White could post serious numbers with his speed in ATL. Worth a look in deep pools. Keep an eye on him in all leagues.

Zhitnik, Alexei D - Expect big PP numbers from him next season in ATL. Solid pick on D for all formats. His age does not worry me.

That is the list. Check back for updates as they become available.

Team Cheat Sheet: Ottawa Senators

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Ottawa Senators:

Alfredsson, Daniel RW - What can't he do? Fantasy stud that shows no sign of slowing down.

Corvo, Joe D - Heavy shot, can add up some points.

Donovan, Shean RW - UPDATE He will be a great match up play for SHPs. Should play the 3rd or 4th line but keep an eye on him and add him if he gets top six minutes. You never know with this guy, he has the ability, just needs to learn how to use his stone hands. DND

Eaves, Patrick RW - He didn't get it done last year on the big line. Look for him to score around 25 goals and 50+ points next season.

Emery, Ray G - He is a legit fantasy goalie. He is the clear #1 in OTT now and will get a lion's share of the starts.

Fisher, Mike C - I expect Fisher to keep developing next year and scoring more points. Good pick for deep pools. Excellent SHP threat.

Foligno, Nick LW - Not a huge goal scorer but he is gritty and can score some. Not much fantasy value yet. DND

Gerber, Martin G - Ummm, maybe if Emery gets hurt he is an option. DND

Glass, Jeff G - He could get some time in the NHL if Emery gets hurt for a long period of time. Decent prospect in net. DND

Guard, Kelly G - Not much value in the near future. DND

Heatley, Dany LW - Back to back 50 goal seasons. He is a fantasy beats and will likely go in the top three of most drafts.

Hennessy, Josh C - Prospect who is slated to be a second line center and dangerous on the PP. Keep an eye on him.

Kelly, Chris C - Match up play. DND

McAmmond, Dean C/LW - Match up play. DND

McGrattan, Brian RW - Solid PIM man. A must in leagues that use fighers.

Meszaros, Andrej D - A solid keeper pick on D. His +/- should improve and his points should go up.

Neil, Chris RW - A great PIM league player. He could add more points to thos eheavy PIM totals next season.

Nycholat, Lawrence D - not much value. DND

Phillips, Chris D - Decent D-man option in deeper pools.

Redden, Wade D - the groin is healed. Look for him to return to form next season. Solid draft pick on the blue line.

Saprykin, Oleg LW - Match up play. DND

Schubert, Christoph D - Can play a little wing and has big offensive upside. Keeper potential.

Spezza, Jason C - Love this kid. As a center he is a solid draft pick as high as the first round. Great keeper, does it all.

Vermette, Antoine C/LW - Worth a look in deep leagues and keepers. He could break out next season.

Volchenkov, Anton D - Great in real life, does not offer much to fantasy owners. DND

That is the list. Check back for updates as they become available.

Team Cheat Sheet: Vancouver Canucks

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Vancouver Canucks:

Bieksa, Kevin D - Wow, what a find last season for fantasy managers. Great keeper and solid pick for all formats.

Bulis, Jan C/LW - Match up play. DND

Burrows, Alex LW - Decent match up for PIMs. DND

Cooke, Matt LW - Match up play. DND

Cowan, Jeff LW - :UPDATE: Re-signed:Great for PIM leagues and those that use fighters.

Fitzpatrick, Rory D - DND

Grabner, Michael RW - has good offensive skills. He could make the team in camp next season. Keep an eye on him, he could end up playing with the twins.

Green, Josh C - DND

Isbister, Brad LW - UPDATE Not sure what role he will play in VAN, but I know what role he will play in my fantasy league, FA waiver scrap. DND

Kesler, Ryan C - :UPDATE: Re-signed:Has to show he can score consistently in the NHL. Gamble pick.

Krajicek, Lukas D - Has a chance to improve last season's numbers. Keep an eye on. DND

Linden, Trevor C - Match up play. DND

Luongo, Roberto G - One of the 3 elite fantasy goalies.

Miller, Aaron D - UPDATE I like his game, but it does not = fantasy value. DND

Mitchell, Willie D - DND

Morrison, Brendan C - I'd rather you draft one of the other 700 centers. Deep pools only, late pick.

Naslund, Markus LW/RW - Has lost some of his flash but still has value. Mid round pick.

Ohlund, Mattias D - Solid points D-man and he gets healthy PIMs.

Pyatt, Taylor LW -:UPDATE: Pyatt has signed a two year deal with VAN: He showed some jump and bite last season. Decent mid round pick. Could score 30+ goals next season.

Salo, Sami D - Offers good point totals from the blue line but not much else.

Sanford, Curtis G - UPDATE If he plays more than ten games he could get hurt again. Look for Luongo to still play his heavy load of games. DND

Santala, Tommi C - DND

Schneider, Cory G - :UPDATE: Re-signed: Good farm team pick. He could be a #1 goalie one day. It likely won't be in VAN.

Sedin, Daniel LW - Solid top LW option. 36 goals last season and he could break 40 next season.

Sedin, Henrik C - Gets more assists and PIMs than his brothers but he does not net many goals. Just ten goals last season. Solid center draft pick for all formats.

Shannon, Ryan RW - UPDATE A very talented offensive player. He could get a chance on the Sedin line. Sleeper pick. Better for keeper leagues than one year pools.

Sopel, Brent D - Another decent point producing D-man. Late round pick in deep pools.

Thats the list. Check back for updates as they become available.

Team Cheat Sheet: New Jersey Devils

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

New Jersey Devils:

Bergfors, Nicklas RW - Still a year or two away from making a solid impact in NJ he is a great farm team pick up. Keep him on your radar.

Brodeur, Martin G - The number one fantasy goalie for all formats, IMO.

Brylin, Sergei C/LW - Match up play. An option in deep deep pools. DND

Clarkson, David RW - Was not rated that high but has moved up the propects rank fast. Close to making an impact on the NJD roster. Keep an eye on. DND

Dowd, Jim C - No fantasy value. DND

Elias, Patrik C/LW - He had a down year by his standards but expect him to be back to a PPG pace. Solid early pick in all formats.

Gionta, Brian RW - Like Elias, Gionta had a drop in production last season. Gionta is still a good pick if you are looking for a goal scorer.

Greene, Andy D - Talented young D-man. One to watch. DND

Janssen, Cam RW - Good PIM league depth player. Good for leagues that use fighters.

Langenbrunner, Jaime RW - Enjoyed a great season last year. He could easily put up 60 points this next season too.

Madden, John C - Match up play, especially for SHPs. DND

Marshall, Grant RW - Good math up play. DND

Martin, Paul D - Can score some points. Worth a look in deep leagues.

Matvichuk, Richard D - His day has past. DND

Oduya, Johnny D - No real value. DND

Pandolfo, Jay RW - Match up only. DND

Parise, Jordan G - Future bench warmer for Brody. DND

Parise, Zack C - Great keeper pick. He broke out last season and will just continue to improve. Solid pick for all formats.

Rachunek, Karel D - Will be a decent player in NJ, but not much fantasy value unless he gets key PP time. Check in for updates closer to draft time.

Rasmussen, Erik C - DND

Rupp, Michael RW - :UPDATE: Re-signed: Match up play for PIMs. DND

Vasyunov, Alexander LW - Best goal scorer in the Devils system. Get him on your farm team next season or keep him on your radar.

Vishnevski, Vitaly D - UPDATE Heavy hitter but little fantasy value. DND

Weekes, Kevin G - UPDATE Weekes will provide a solid backup to Brodeur. This will allow Brodeur to be more rested come playoff time. He will offer little fantasy value.

White, Colin D - No value here for fantasy. DND

Zajac, Travis C - The play of Zajac will allow NJ to let Gomez walk. Solid keeper option. Should be able to help in all formats next season.

Zudrus, Dainius C/RW - UPDATE Zubrus should fit into the NJ system well. He could get around 20 goals and 50 points, but I would not look for big numbers this year.

Thats the list for now. Check back for updates as they become available.

Team Cheat Sheet: San Jose Sharks

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

San Jose Sharks:

Bernier, Steve RW - Power forward with great centers to feed him. High keeper option. SHould help in all leagues next year.

Brown, Curtis C - Match up play. DND

Carle, Matt D - Great young D-man. PP specialist. Solid keeper pick for points.

Cheechoo, Jonathan RW - Hot and cold, you have to take him if he falls to you.

Clowe, Ryan LW/RW - Put up good numbers last season. Don't overreach for him. Deep PIM pools only.

Dakers, Taylor G - He could end up the back up next season.

Davison, Rob D - Little value here. DND

Ehrhoff, Christian D - Great D option in all pools.

Goc, Marcel C - Very talented young player. Has a hard time getting ice in SJ. Keep an eye on. DND

Greiss, Thomas G - Very talented young goalie. Will battle Dakers for the future #1 role in SJ.

Grier, Mike RW - Match up play. DND

Marleau, Patrick C - Very good center option. Even playing the 2nd line role he tallies solid fantasy stats.

McLaren, Kyle D - Not consistent enough for my taste. Match up play. DND

Michalek, Milan LW/RW - Could easily hit 35+ goals next season. Great keeper pick. He has all the tools to help in all fantasy formats. Solid draft pick.

Murray, Doug D - No value here. DND

Nabokov, Evgeni G - Wilson announced he wanted to clean up his goal tending situation before next season. Everyone feels this means Nabby is the clear #1 next season. Great draft pick with a strong team in front of him. Still a good keeper at his age too.

Pavelski, Joe C - Joe enjoyed some success on the wing and at center his season. I remember Stevenson last season had similar numbers and then vanished this season. I don't trust SJS forwards like Pavelski in Wilson's system. DND

Rissmiller, Patrick C - Match up play only. DND

Rivet, Craig D - :UPDATE: Re-signed: A good late round option on D.

Smith, Mark C - Match up play only. DND

Thornton, Joe C - He is a lock for 100+ points. Sadly his one time massive PIMs have been cut greatly. Solid 1st round pick in any format.

Traverse, Patrick D - No value. DND

Vlasic, Marc-Edouard D - Keeper talent and bright young star. Solid points D-man option for all formats.

That is it for now. Check back for updates as they become available.

Team Cheat Sheet: Chicago Blackhawks

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do not draft

Chicago Blackhawks:

Alexeev, Nikita RW - He has a big frame but has yet to develop into a fantasy threat. DND

Arkhipov, Denis C/LW - He has some hot streaks. Match up play. DND

Barker, Cam D - If he skates regular time in the NHL he will hurt many of the D-men stats in CHI. He could get key PP time away from Seabrook and Keith. Solid farm team or keeper pick.

Bolland, Dave C - Plays more of a checking roloe but has great speed and good finish. Is capable of top 6 minutes. Is always a threat short handed. Lacks NHL size. Keep an eye on. DND

Bondra, Peter RW - Match up play only. DND

Bourque, Rene LW - Some injuries really set back his season. Look for him to do much better next season, especially with Toews in town. Sleeper pick.

Havlat, Martin LW/RW - There are few players as fun to watch as Havlat. Injuries seem to happen to this guy more than Mr. Glass in the movie Unbreakable. High risk, high reward. If he is there in the late second or third round I would take him. He can contend for the scoring title any season.

Holmqvist, Mikael C - Match up at best. DND

Kane, Patrick RW - UPDATE Drafted #1 by CHI he will get every chance to play next year and could be a monster for points. Solid keeper pick and could be a value in all leagues next year.

Keith, Duncan D - I love his game and think he is an excellent pick for most formats.

Khabibulin, Nikolai G - He has not played over 57 games in the last three seasons. He is a medium level fantasy goalie.

Lalime, Patrick G - Insurance pick if you have Bulin.

Lang, Robert C - He will have the chance to put up lots of points in CHI, his work ethic and age are a concern. Decent gamble pick.

Lapointe, Martin RW - This gritty forward is still putting up PIMs. Deep PIM league draft pick only. Late rounds.

Perreault, Yanic C - UPDATE A solid pick for leagues with face off percentage. He can still score goals and in CHI he will have plenty of talent to play with in the top 6. Age makes him a bad option in keeper pools.

Ruutu, Tuomo C - If health issues are behind him he is a monster for PIM leagues. Also capable of playing the wing he will put up better points next season to go with his healthy PIM totals.

Samsonov, Sergei LW -:UPDATE: Acquired from MTL: Will have a chance to rediscover his game in CHI. I would only gamble on him in deep pools or if you are empty at LW.

Seabrook, Brent D - Great option on D in PIM leagues. He should see more PP time next year to help his offense. Solid keeper pick.

Sharp, Patrick C/RW - Third line or checking center. Showed he could score 20 goals and get PIMs. Match up play or late round option in deep pools.

Skille, Jack RW - Future power forward. Decent farm team pick.

Toews, Jonathan C - A gifted player who can also play either wing. He has all the tools and looks to be a fantasy stud for years. A must draft keeper and should help in all leagues as a rookie.

Vandermeer, Jim D - Injuries slowed him down last year but he is easily capable of 20 pts and 100 PIMs.

Vrbata, Radim RW - Low totals for a top line RW. The arrival of Toews should increase Vrbata's points. Late middle round pick.

Williams, Jason C/RW - More than capable of scoring 60 points next season. Decent late mid round pick.

Wisniewski, James D - Has some good upside. Keep an eye on. DND

Zyuzin, Andrei D - :UPDATE: Acquired from Calgary: Don't look for any impact for fantasy here. DND

Thats it for now. Check back for updates as they become available.

Team Cheat Sheet: Florida Panthers

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Florida Panthers:

Allen, Bryan D - :UPDATE: Extended contract: Decent pick for points and PIMs.

Anderson, Craig G - Little value. DND

Booth, David LW - Has the tools to become a power forward but shows no signs of breaking out next year. DND

Bouwmeester, Jay D - A solid D option. Good pick for all formats and a great keeper pick on the blue line.

Campbell, Gregory C - Match up play only. DND

Dvorak, Radek C/RW - UPDATE Radek is hard working and will fit in well with the FLA system. He could be a dark horse for points if he plays the top line. Gamble pick.

Frolik, Michael C - A very gifted player, he could be a top line forward in the future. Good farm team pick.

Gratton, Chris C - Good PIM center. Match up play or late round deep pool pick.

Horton, Nathan C/RW - :UPDATE: Signed a long term deal: A great pick in PIM leagues. It looks like he has balanced into a consistent 30 goal player that still has plenty of upside to score more.

Jokinen, Olli C - This is another center I would gladly draft. He is a monster fantasy player in all formats.

Kolnik, Juraj RW - Heavy shot. Worth a gamble in late rounds of deep pools.

Kreps, Kamil C - Good puck handling skills and vision, is a few years off yet. DND

Mclean, Brett C - UPDATE Mclean had a good season last year, he gets solid SOG for limited ice time and is a decent match up play.

Mezei, Branislav D - Match up play. DND

Montador, Steve D - another good PIM D-man. Match up play or deep PIM league roster spot.

Olesz, Rostislav C - He has the skill to be a 60-80 point player but has yet to break out. Good keeper pick. Its a gamble if he can help most single season pools.

Peltonen, Ville LW - Match up play. DND

Salei, Ruslan D - Solid point/PIM pick.

Semenov, Alexei D - Keep an eye on. DND

Stewart, Anthony RW - A future power forward. He hits anything that moves and has a heavy and accurate shot. With all the talent FLA has at center he could be an effective scorer.

Stumpel, Jozef C - At his age you never know when the production will end. Decent depth, late round pick.

Van Ryn, Mike D - Can score decent points and add some PIMs. Injuries slowed him last season. Expect more from him next year.

Vokoun, Tomas G - :UPDATE: Acquired from Florida: Florida has been getting better, and with this guy in net they will be a solid team. Vokoun is a great option for all pools. While he has had injury issues the last two seasons, he is the real deal.

Weiss, Stephen C - Enormous offensive talent. Solid keeper pick. Might not help much in single season, shallow pools.

Welch, Noah D - A very good play maker who could be a top pairing D-man in the future. Solid keeper or farm team pick.

Zednik, Richard LW - UPDATE
His age and injuries make him a risky pick, but he can still score goals and will get that chance on the PP.

That is it for now. Check back for updates as they become available.

Colorado signs Hlinka

The Colorado Avalanche have signed Jaroslav Hlinka, C/LW, to a one year deal. Reports say it is a two way contract.

Hlinka was considered one of the best players in the Czech league last season. Hlinka scored 19 goals and 57 points in 46 games played.

He could be a fantasy force if he adapts to the North American game and plays the wing with either Stastny or Sakic.

Here is a link to his career stats:

Hlinka Career Stats

Team Cheat Sheet: Boston Bruins

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Boston Bruins:

Alberts, Andrew D - Solid PIM D-man. Decent pick in deep PIM leagues. Better as a match up play.

Allen, Bobby D - No real value. DND

Axelsson, P.J. LW - Saw some decent value last season playing with Murray and Savard. I expect thats over. DND

Bergeron, Patrice C - Huge talent. Has 100 pt potential. Solid keeper pick. His +/- should improve next season.

Bochenski, Brandon RW - He enjoyed the best NHL success of his career in Boston last season but he will have to fend off very talented youth to hold his spot. Gamble pick. DND

Chara, Zdeno D - A top fantasy D-man for points and PIMs. Hopefully he can clean up that -21 last season. He also had over 200 SOG last season.

Chistov, Stanislav LW/RW - His work ethic and injuries have held him back. If given the ice time next year he could become a solid fantasy player. Sleeper/gamble pick.

Fernandez, Manny G - UPDATE Now that Manny is finally in Boston he will get the number one spot. Will he hold up? He has never carried a full load on his own. He is a gamble pick but one that has solid upside.

Kessel, Phil C/LW - He will post higher numbers next season and is a good keeper prospect. Could move to wing so he is not stuck behind Bergeron and Savard.

Kobasew, Chuck RW - He defines streaky. Could see 20-30 goals and 70+ PIMs if healthy next year.

Krejci, David C - He is not afraid to take hits to make plays and could earn a spot in the NHL next season if BOS goes young. He is a solid prospect but could see limited value being behind Bergeron, Savard and Kessel.

MacDonald, Joey G - No real value. DND

Mowers, Mark RW - Match up play at best. DND

Murray, Glen RW - Age and injury are a concern but he will still be able to score goals. If you need a goal scorer in deep pools he could be your man.

Rask, Tuukka G - One of the top goalie prospects in the world, he could use some AHL time. Great farm team or keeper pick. Be prepaired to sit on him 2-3 years.

Reich, Jeremy RW/C - He should make the team as an energy guy. Good player for leagues that use fighters only. Match up play for other PIM leagues.

Savard, Marc C - This guy is a monster for PIMs and points. His +/- should improve and he has proven his numbers are not a fluke. Great pick at center.

Schaefer, Peter LW - UPDATE He will be given a chance at top 6 minutes and is worth a look in deep pools. 60 points is certainly possible and if he catches fire he could pass that. He is a good option because he plays all situations.

Soderber, Carl C - UPDATE He is a good prospect with solid upside. He has to prove he can overcome his eye injury. A decent farm team option but still a few years away from the NHL. DND

Sturm, Marco LW - Decent goal scorer who gets solid SOG. Mid round pick.

Tenkrat, Petr RW - Match up play. DND

Thomas, Tim G - He might get to split next season with Manny since Manny has never handled the full load. Insurance pick if you have Manny.

Thornton, Shawn LW/RW - UPDATE He will bring grit and toughness. A good PIM play for match up. He can score some points but I fear he and Reich could split the NHL time. DND

Ward, Aaron D - No value. DND

Wideman, Dennis D - Had a bad start for BOS but he is a good point and PIM D-man.

That is it for now. Be sure to check back for updates as players sign and prospects move up the food chain.

Team Cheat Sheet: Tampa Bay Lightning

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Tampa Bay Lightning:

Boyle, Dan D - He is a top level fantasy D-man. Can put up points with the best of them. +/- is his only weakness.

Craig, Ryan C - Expect better numbers from Craig next year. Worth a gamble with a late pick in deeper pools.

Denis, Marc G - Any TB goalie is a gamble. We have no clue who, if anyone, will be #1. I like him as a sleeper pick if he is available late for depth in net.

Dimaio, Rob RW - DND

Helenius, Riku G - Good looking prospect but a few years away. Could be worth a farm team spot. DND

Holmqvist, Johan G - Inking a 1 year deal does not add confidence to his play. Has a shot at #1, but so do 4 other guys! DND

Janik, Doug D - Match up play only. DND

Jones, Blair C - Lots of offensive talent, but strength and work ethic are a question mark. Keep an eye on if you are in a keeper or have a farm team. DND

Karlsson, Andreas C - DND

Koshechkin, Vasily G - He is coming over from Russia next season and with TB's rep he could easily see some NHL starts. Farm team or deep keeper option. Ramo and Helenius are both scouted higher than Koshechkin, but anything can happen in TB.

Kuba, Filip D - Heavy shot that can score goals. Decent points D-man who scored 15 goals last season but offers little else.

Lecavalier, Vinny C - 1st round pick in every format. Even though he is a center his numbers are too good to pass up unless you can draft a player of equal numbers at wing. Huge keeper.

Lukowich, Brad D - UPDATE Lukowich will fill the role Sarich left behind. No value here, DND

O'Brien, Shane D - :UPDATE: Extended contract: A must have in PIM leagues. He can also add more points to go with his huge PIM totals next season.

Ouellet, Michel RW - UPDATE Like in PIT, he will have grade A talent to leech from. Expect the same point totals as last year. I would say let someone else draft this guy, but he is OK late in deep leagues.

Pratt, Nolan D - DND

Prospal, Vaclav C/RW - He had a down year last season. I expect him to be back near 70 pts next season.

Ramo, Karri G - Considered by many as TB's top prospect he will have a chance to earn the #1 job in net. I am not sold on this kid and would say DND.

Ranger, Paul D - Decent option if you need a points only D-man. Should have better numbers next season. Take late only.

Richards, Brad C - His horrid +/- last season had managers in a fit. I expect a big season from Richards. Solid center option.

Richardson, Luke D - No value here. DND

Roy, Andre RW - Solid option in PIM leagues that use fighters. Match up play for PIMs as well.

Smaby, Matt D - Top D prospect for TB. He is more of a big hitting, defensive D-man. DND

St. Louis, Martin RW - Solid option at RW for an early pick. Huge in SHP leagues.

Stewart, Karl LW - Career grinder. DND

Tarnasky, Nick C - Not much value here. DND

Taylor, Tim C - No value here. DND

Ward, Jason RW - Match up play at best. DND

Thats it for now. Check back for updates as players sign and prospects move up the food chain.

Team Cheat Sheet: Buffalo Sabres

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Buffalo Sabres:

Afinogenov, Maxim RW - Highly skilled. Gets both points and PIMs. Solid pick at RW. Injury worries.

Campbell, Brian D - Solid D option for points and +/-. Does not get a lot of PIMs or SOG.

Connolly, Tim C - Injuries have really hurt his development. He has potential to put up Briere type numbers. If he falls in your draft sweep him up quick. High risk, high reward.

Gaustad, Paul C - Good match up player. Value could rise if Drury and Briere both leave. DND

Hecht, Jochen C/LW - Can score decent points and puts up decent SOG. Mid round C/LW selection.

Kalinin, Dmitri D - Nothing special here, but keep an eye on him. His PP time could lead to better points. DND

Kotalik, Ales RW - A huge blast from the point, he can score points. However he is anything but consistent. Late rounds of deep pools.

Lehtonen, Mikko D - It remains to be seen how he will fit in Buffalo. DND

Lydman, Toni D - Good match up play. DND

MacArthur, Clarke C/LW - Has a sniper type shot and loves to get PIMs. He could see a breakout year next season. Solid sleeper pick and potential keeper option.

Mair, Adam C - 128 PIMs last season. But as a center I would say use him for match up play only. DND

Miller, Ryan G - He saved my season his rookie year and he is solid pick in all formats. Great keeper goalie.

Numminen, Teppo D - :UPDATE: Re-signed: Still a good option to get assists but I'd advise match up only. DND

Paetsch, Nathan D - A D-man who can play regular shifts at LW! Take him for all formats!

Paille, Daniel LW - He can score and has PIM grit. A deep team makes it unclear if he will have solid value next year. Take late in deep keepers and keep an eye on him in all formats. DND

Peters, Andrew LW - Good for leagues that use fighters. Solid PIM option.

Pominville, Jason RW - Can be a 40 goal guy but still not near a PPG player. Could be hurt if Briere leaves. Solid pick but don't overreach.

Roy, Derek C - :UPDATE: With the Captains gone, look for Roy's ice to skyrocket: He is a solid all around fantasy player. He gives you stats in everything and could see a major increase in PP time next season. A solid pick in all formats.

Ryan, Michael C - Showed great speed last season in his 19 games. Match up play. DND

Sekera, Andrej D - Has been compared to
Meszaros and can be a solid two way D-man. Keep an eye on. DND

Spacek, Jaroslav D - Decent shot and points. Gets average PIMs. If he is not in BUF next year I would pass on him. If he is in BUF he is a solid D option for most formats.

Stafford, Drew RW - This kid has all the tools. I can see him being a Justin Williams type as early as next season. Great keeper pick and should contribute to all pool formats.

Tallinder, Henrik D - Match up play only. Can be a hot goal scorer, so watch him for the hot streak. DND

Thibault, Jocelyn G - UPDATE He will be a solid backup for Buffalo. Add him ASAP if Miller gets hurt. DND

Vanek, Thomas LW - A solid #1 LW option in all formats. He has 50+ goal scoring potential.

Zagrapan, Marek C - Still a year or two away he could see NHL time next season if BUF loses its UFA centers. Great upside and a farm team or deep keeper pool pick. DND for most single season leagues.

Thats it for now. Major updates expected as the UFA season hits. Check back for updates as players sign and prospects jump up the food chain.

Team Cheat Sheet: New York Rangers

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

New York Rangers:

Avery, Sean C/LW/RW - I have this guy on my keeper and if you are in a PIM league he is a must have. He gets SHPs and he has a chance to score more than the 48 points he had last season.

Betts, Blair C - No value. DND

Bourret, Alex RW - Has offensive skills and is very physical. Great prospect, its not clear yet when he will be with the big club. Farm team pick, keep and eye out for updates.

Callahan, Ryan RW - He fit right in playing with Avery and Shanny last year. His fantasy value is still up in the air but he is a goal scorer. Worth a look.

Dawes, Nigel LW - Should be a member of the '07-'08 rangers. Looks like a second line winger at this point. Could score goals.

Drury, Chris C - UPDATE Drury could play the shut down role in NY or end up playing with Jagr. He could end up with lots of PP time or little. We don't know how NY will use him yet, and I would not look for Drury to repeat last season's stats. Gamble pick.

Dubinsky, Brandon C
- Has 2nd or 3rd line potential. Power forward type. Might not make the big club next year. DND

Girardi, Daniel D - Young D-man but NYR D-men don't score much. DND

Gomez, Scott C - UPDATE Will he break out playing with Jagr? His fantasy stock just shot up in all pools, but he could pull the same old disappearing acts. He will at least get near a PPG. Lacks goals and SOG. Solid assist and PP guy.

Hollweg, Ryan C - Great for PIM leagues if you can snag him late in deep pools.

Hossa, Marcel LW - He got very hot when playing with jagr. Keep an eye on how he starts next season. DND

Hutchinson, Andrew D - UPDATE He is more of a PP specialist. He has a big blast from the point but does not have a complete game. Keep an eye on him, he can catch fire, but he might not play much in the NHL. DND

Immonen, Jarkko C - Even if he makes the NHL next season I don't see him setting the league on fire. Has talent and could go on hot streaks. DND

Jagr, Jaromir RW - 1st round selection in all formats. Has dropped tolater rounds the last two years and he keeps getting it done.

Jessiman, Hugh RW - at 6'6" and 230+ lbs get this guy on your farm team now! Once he develops his defensive game and learns to use his size more he could be a top line winger.

Lundqvist, Henrik G - Great goalie option for all formats. A must have in keepers.

Malik, Marek D - Decent assists and some PIMs. Solid +/-. He is an decent pick.

Mara, Paul D - He could be a beast in NY or a bust. Don't overreach for him, but he is a good gamble.

Montoya, Al G - Could be the back up next year, or could find himself a #1 if he gets traded. Solid keeper pick.

Ozolinsh, Sandis D - It seems his career is over. DND

Pock, Thomas D - Has good offensive upside. Late sleeper pick.

Prucha, Petr C/RW - He should drop in your drafts, if he does, snag him.

Rozsival, Michal D - Solid option on D for points.

Shanahan, Brendan LW - Stay tuned for updates on his health but assuming he plays he is a fantasy beast.

Straka, Martin C/LW - He is long of tooth but he should put up similar numbers next year.

Strudwick, Jason D - UPDATE No value here. DND

Tyutin, Fedor D - Could improve next year on all stats. Keep and eye on. DND

Valiquette, Stephan G - Could serve as back up to Lundy. DND

Thats it. Check back for updates as players sign and prospects move up the food chain.

Team Cheat Sheet: Edmonton Oilers

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Edmonton Oilers:

Cogliano, Andrew C - He is very fast and has moves to go with it. He opted to leave Michigan early so we will see his professional debut in 2007-2008. MacT is not a fan of playing young guys so expect him to start off in the AHL. Good for farm teams. Keep an eye on him.

Garon, Mathieu G - UPDATE He will be a great backup to Rolo and could even push for the number one spot. Insurance pick if you have Rolo, otherwise I'd stay away.

Greene, Matt D - Young D-man who should improve all stats next season. Good PIM player and should ad dmore points to it next year.

Hemsky, Ales RW - You watch him and think he should score 100 points in his sleep. Yet he doesn't... Does not shoot enough but still a solid option in a draft. He should continue to improve and could explode any season.

Horcoff, Shawn C - Like all of EDM last year his season was forgettable. While I think he will bounce back, I also think centers are too deep to gamble. Take him in deep pools or if he drops in your draft. Don't overreach.

Markkanen, Jussi G - Keep an eye on EDM net this year. Snag him off FA list if you need help in net, but DND.

Moreau, Ethan LW - Great in SHP and PIM leagues, there is no need to draft this guy. Use him for match up play and hold him during his hot streaks. DND

Nedved, Petr C - DND

Nilsson, Robert LW - Has all the talent and skill. Has developed slower than the NYI would have liked. They are banking he does not have the drive to stick in the NHL since they dealt him to EDM. Look for him to make an impact next season with the Oilers. Solid keeper pick, could breakout next year.

Pisani, Fernando RW - Good wrist shot but no where near enough results. DND

Pitkanen, Joni D - UPDATE The Oil finally got the D-man they wanted. He will score plenty of points, but pools that count +/- should beware.

Penner, Dustin LW - UPDATE He will have big pressure next year, but will see lots of PP time and play with Hemsky. This big man should net over 30 goals and give you quality PIMs. A great keeper pick at LW and should help all pools next season.

Pouliot, Marc-Antoine C - Projected as a 2nd line center with 1st line potential, its hard to see where all these talented young centers will play in EDM. No wonder the "Trade Horcoff" rumors are so loud.

Reasoner, Marty C - Match up play only. DND

Roloson, Dwayne G - He had some decent numbers on a horrid team. A good option if you want to take a goalie in a later round.

Roy, Mathieu D - He didn't show a lot last season in his 16 games but he is young and could see some ice. Keep an eye on but DND

Sanderson, Geoff LW - UPDATE He could still score some, but lately if you go to EDM you do nothing. DND

Schremp, Rob C - If he learns to work better he can put up points with the best of them. He is magical with the puck and a solid keeper pick.

Smid, Ladislav D - This kid could be a good one. Sleeper pick, late.

Staios, Steve D - Good PIM option who can score some points.

Stoll, Jarret C - This guy can rack around 60+ pts 70+ PIMs next season. Solid option at C.

Stortini, Zack C/RW - He showed he had an edge to his game and put up huge PIMs. 105 PIMs in 29 Games. Great for PIM leagues and those that use fighters.

Thoresen, Patrick LW/C - I'm not looking for this guy to help anyone next season. DND

Tjarnqvist, Daniel D - Decent point getting D-man. Not many SOG.

Torres, Raffi LW - Good option on LW for PIM leagues. Has potential to add up more points next season.

Thats it for now. Check in for updates as players sign and prospects move up the food chain.

Q & A Segment 5/30/07

I have been working on the Team Cheat Sheets and have slacked in getting your questions answered on the blog. While I did answer them via E-Mail I now post them for all to read.

Alex in Vancouver
I noticed in your team notes you mention match up plays. What are they and how do I know when to use them? How many of them can you use in a season?

Thanks for the question Alex. Match up plays are using guys on your FA list or waiver wire to gain stats that are not regular roster players. Many leagues don't carry large rosters leaving lot of talent on the FA list to use. You can also use match up play to make up games due to injured players. For example, If I am behind in PIMs and I know that TOR is going to play OTT I can add Wade Belak from the FA list and plug him in for the game. He normally fights against OTT or takes penalties. Belak is not a player that gets held in most leagues and its a solid chance for PIMs on a night you might not have a full roster on defense.

How many times you can use this tactic depends on your league settings. Some leagues use move limits to discourage this type of play. I feel its a great tool and challenging to managers who love active leagues. It can be used to make up all kinds of stats and a tool I have used for years.

During the season we will have a column to highlight the can't miss match ups of the week. So stay tuned for that.

Ed in Arizona
Hey, I have groin problems and I make a lot of money. Will I be looking for a new house with all the deep young cheaper talent in Phoenix?

Thanks Ed, your question made me do the PHX Team Cheat Sheet today. While PHX is loaded in offensive defense men who also have grit, many are also young and unproven. I think its much more likely that Boynton or Morris will be looking for a new home if someone is traded.

Jimmy
Taylor Pyatt was just offered to me in a trade for a pick in next years draft. I have 8 keepers and I could use the pick to load up next season. Should I take the deal?

Thanks for the Q, It is hard to say for sure not knowing who your eight keepers are. Next time try to include them and I will give a more detailed answer. In short I would say take the pick if its high enough. With only eight keepers per team your draft should have lots of talent. While Pyatt showed us something last season and if signed could skate with the Sedin twins all year, he is still not proven as consistent. You likely can pick up a more consistent player with the pick.
If you are going to drop Pyatt anyway, take the pick.

Seth in LA
Rank these players please. Hossa Havlat Heatly Semin.

Sure thing Seth. Next time it will make it easier to rank them if you include your league's scoring setup. I'd go Heatly, Hossa, Havlat, Semin. The Semin/Havlat combo is hard. If healthy I like Havlat much more, but Semin could likely be the more reliable hold. It depends on if you like to gamble a little.

Dave in Binghamton
i am a huge OTT fan having the baby Sens in my hometown. i noticed you are from bingo too. when you gonna come have a beer with me and talk hockey? who is your favorite to come out of Bingo??????

Thanks for the Beer invite. Maybe when the season starts and I determine you are not in need of a restraining order... Not really a fantasy question but I welcome all kinds of questions. I am a big Bonvie fan. He was a local legend for fighting. I also liked the watch the Ferraro brothers when we had the Rangers farm team. They were nothing special in terms of NHL talent but they were fun to watch in the AHL. I'm gonna go with Spezza though. He has bloomed into a great player and it was a thrill to get to see him develop in Binghamton. OTT left him in Binghamton a year too long, IMO but all seemed to work out well.

Jack in Jill
I am not in a keeper but my buddies and I do the same league each year. We determine the draft order from where we finished and I locked up the #1 pick! Yes that means I finished last but who can I take #1 to make sure I can contend?

Way to think positive Jack. Maybe if you didn't spend so much time in Jill you would have done better. You can't go wrong with taking Crosby. He is a lock for 100+ points and solid all around totals. While Thornton is a lock to load you up in assists, he is no longer a PIM monster. I also hate taking goalies with top picks. Heatly has back2back 50 Goal seasons and is always a top fantasy guy but I'd stick with Crosby and not rule out Ovechkin. Ovechkin will be looking to come back in a big way next year, and he could have better talent to set him up. Sid or Ovechkin can't miss. Ovechkin gets the edge if your league has SOG.

Phil in a bar
I'm still drinking over my 7th place finish. I wrote this other advice guy all the time but that *edit* never answered my questions. Are you going to be a *edit* and ignore me too?

Well Phil...maybe!

JT in sink
Why doesn't Drury get any love on this site?

I think thats a boy band reference but I can't be sure since I am a man. Drury gets lots of love from me. He has been on of my favs since he hit the scene in Colorado. That said, he does not get big fantasy love from me and even less from The Arrogant Puck.

Most b2b 30 goal scorers with 60+ points would get more love. If Drury stays in BUF I think he can repeat those numbers. In a new city I am not so sure. I don't shower him in fantasy love for his numbers because at any point he could be asked to be the shut down guy and that would hurt his fantasy game. Plus he blocks shots and givs his all which could lead to injury. Center is just far too deep a position and there is always going to be some manager that takes Drury way too high in their draft. I love Drury, but I don't think he is worth the price it would take to get him in a draft or via trade.

Gilly in Detroit
I love the site! Great work. Will Nashville's current turmoil hurt the teams fantasy value next season? Specifically Radulov?

Thanks for the support Gilly. Nashville's arena attendance and turmoil over if they will stay or go could certainly impact the players. We have seen off ice distraction hurt guys before. Radulov should get more ice and PP time next year and will have better numbers next season no matter what is going on in NSH.

Hitman in TB
I seem to always get hurt because I draft too many players from my Lightning. How can I get the guys I love to watch and win?

A common problem in fantasy leagues of any kind is detaching the love we have for players in real life and choosing the guys that can give us a fantasy title. Using match up play and a heavy rotation of players is one way to make up stats if you are falling behind. I'd also advise watching more games of other teams. I tend to love watching my fantasy players, no matter who they play for in real life. I do stay away from stud fantasy guys on teams I hate in real life. There are normally enough studs to go around that I can pass on a few. Also try to get your main favorite and then build around him.

Sari in NY
I love playing fantasy hockey with the boys and I only date hockey players. I always finish near last place. How can I do better?

Always love questions from the ladies. Try drafting guys not based on looks? I joke because you didn't give me much to work with. I would advise using the team cheat sheets and working on an actual draft plan based on your leagues settings. Just invest more time in it and you should be fine. Most leagues you can finish in the top 5 just by being active over the entire season. Most managers lose interest if they are not doing well and you can leap frog them.

Frank
You seem to give more advice about keeper leagues then you do others. Why is that and what about those of us that don't have keepers?

Thanks Frank, I do highlight potential keeper picks more right now and most times those players are not ready to contribute to leagues that have only 18 man rosters. The reason I am highlighting possible keepers right now is because its the off season. Most managers that are active right now are the ones that have leagues they manage and research year round. Once next season gets closer and the season starts you will notice more advice geared toward non-keeper leagues.

Brett in Cali
GO DUCKS! I love PTI on ESPN so I will give you a Toss Up! Who ya got Drew Miller or Kunitz?

Brett, I am also a big fan of PTI. I will not push on this one. Kunitz all the way. He is proven and gets it done in goals and PIMs. Miller had a great game 1 but lets not forget how good Pisani looked last year in the playoffs.

Larry in Edmonton
Will Rolo be our goalie next year, and should I draft him?

Hey Larry, I hope EDM can bounce back next season, they are an exciting team to watch when its clicking. I think Edmonton would like to get a more reliable back up for Roloson. It was clear that Rolo ran out of gas last season, but he still has the skill to get it done. Perhaps they will try to land a guy like Montoya out of NY that they can give some good starts and develop while he has Rolo to learn from.

Bill in New York
Whats the deal with Screech on Celebrity Fit Club?

Bill, I had no idea what you were talking about so I had to google it. His deal is he is a big ass clown and attention whore. I hope Tiffany takes the title or whatever a winner would get.

Sergei in NY
Will Jagr be back to his goal scoring self next year?

I expect Jagr to be big the next three to four years. His shoulder will have time to get stronger and he will be able to release the puck better next year. Don't hesitate to draft Jagr next year or keep him.

Bobby in Boston
What will Chuck Kobashews value be next year?

Hey Bobby, Kobasew will have a chance at top 6 minutes. He is an extremely streaky scorer. I would place him around 20-30 goals next year and healthy PIM totals if he stays healthy. I could easily see someone like Kalus or Chistov stealing ice and PP time from him. Beware of the Chuck cold streak.

OTT Fan #1
Why doesn't Heater get more hype from you?

Thanks for the Q. Mainly because we are trying to offer up info on guys that are more off the radar. Most managers know Heatly is a monster or can see it by just looking at the rankings of their league's player list. Once the season gets closer and we release our top player lists he will tart getting more ink on our site. I also believe that Arrogant Puck and I have both mentioned Heatly highly before.

Big E in Philly
Is it bad that without hockey all I do is lay around and watch Charmed?

Yo Big E. Its very bad, you need some variety. Try some other TV TNA options so that your brain does not turn to mush. At least you are doing some reading on this site to keep you sharp!

Team Cheat Sheet: Phoenix Coyotes

The fast rundown for draft plans. DND = Do Not Draft

Phoenix Coyotes:

Aebischer, David G - UPDATE PHX has found a number 1 goalie, or have they? I love Abbie and think he is still capable of being a #1 in the NHL. PHX will be a true test of his skills. While I expect Abbie to play well (given it is just a one year deal and he is playing for a big contract and to prove he can still be in the NHL) I expect PHX to be a bad to medium team at best. Abbie will have some good games, like Tellqvist and Cujo had the year before, but he will also get shelled many times. He is a decent gamble in deep leagues.

Adams, Kevyn C -
:UPDATE: Placed on waivers, next years role is unclear: Gritty and worth some match up plays. DND

Ballard, Keith D - He will be a great source of points and PIMs next season. Solid D-man option.

Bell, Brendan D - Has some upside but he is low on the depth chart in PHX. DND

Boynton, Nick D - :UPDATE: Placed on waivers, next years role is unclear:His point totals have been down but he is a great PIM man. Good for PIM leagues and leagues that use fighters.

Carcillo, Daniel LW - This kid could really develop over time. Not blessed with loads of skill he has a nose for the net and can score some goals and drops the gloves. Take him in PIM leagues.

Doan, Shane RW - Doan's stats were down last year leaving fantasy owners hurting. Look for him to have a big season now that he has a new contract and PHX will have some talented young centers to pass him the puck. With Carcillo in town Doan will not need to fight as much.

Fischer, Patrick C - Age and centers being easy to acquire makes him a huge DND

Gratton, Josh LW - Great for PIM leagues, but will PHX have room for him and Carcillo? I'd take Carcillo. DND

Hanzal, Martin C - He will be a great 1-2 punch with Mueller down the road. At 6'5" and 200+ lbs he will be hard to handle. How many points he can score in the NHL will depend on how hard he works. A good farm team option and a decent pick for keeper teams looking to rebuild for the future.

Jones, Matt D - PHX is loaded with young D-men, This prospect could be worked in slow. Keep an eye on but DND

Joseph, Curtis G - I expect PHX to bring in a goalie this summer. Not sure where Cujo will sign. Decent bench option if you are very short in net.

Jovanovski, Ed D - This is an elite fantasy D-man when healthy and a must draft.

Kapanen, Niko C - I had high hopes for him last season, but if he can't get it done playing with Hossa there is no hope for him. DND

Kaigorodov, Alexei C - Needs to learn the North American game. Work ethic and heart is questioned. Then again, that was Semin's rep before last season too. Could be very good. Sleeper pick. Check for updates to make sure he is coming over from Russia.

Lisin, Enver RW - If he comes back from Rusia he has huge upside. He struggled to adapt to the NHL last season, so he is a big big big gamble pick that could pay off huge.

Michalek, Zbynek D - Has amazing upside. Sadly PHX is deep with D-men. His value depends on the PP time he gets. I'd prefer you take Jovo or Ballard but Michalek could be a solid option due to the previous guys always getting hurt.

Morris, Derek D - Good points, great PIMs. Solid option on D. +/- is a concern for all PHX D-men.

Mueller, Peter C - PHX's top prospect, he could use at least one more year to develop but with the play of Kopitar last season don't be shocked to see him in the NHL next year. A must draft for farm teams and keeper leagues.

Nolan, Owen RW - Decent option in deep leagues. He just does not produce enough for shallow leagues. Great match up play. Draft/DND depending on your league set up.

Reinprecht, Steve C - Has the talent but never seems to put a full season together. DND

Ricci, Mike C - Will he or won't he retire? Makes no difference to us, DND

Roche, Travis D - Keep an eye on to see if he gets PP time or if the big guns on D get hurt. DND

Roenick, Jeremy C - He thinks he can still play, but don't let him take your fantasy team out to dinner. DND

Scatchard, Dave C - :UPDATE: He was bought out of his contract: Solid PIM match up play. DND

Sjostrom, Fredrik RW - Should see more ice next season. Could be a sleeper pick if you want to gamble. I recommend DND.

Taffe, Jeff C - Made a fast impact last season when he was called up, then he cooled off. DND

Tellqvist, Mikael G - I don't trust his game and if he is in your rotation you are in trouble. DND

Thomas, Bill RW - Scouting has him behind Wheeler and Lisin but the Great One loves his game. He is a goal scorer and could see solid ice next season. Sleeper pick, late rounds.

Tjarnqvist, Mathias LW - No reason for him to become a fantasy asset. DND

Wheeler, Blake RW - Still a couple years away from the NHL he is worth noting for farm team managers. He has a lot of developing to do but he could be a good one a few years from now.

Yandle, Keith D - This prospect is an offensive D-man but with Morris, Jovo, Michalek to compete with for PP time its hard to see him having value next year. Keep an eye on. DND

York, Mike LW - UPDATE He could be a decent gamble pick in late rounds of deep leagues. You can probably just add him from your FA list if he gets hot. DND

Zigomanis, Mike C - He has speed and a decent game, however he might get lost in the shuffle if PHX brings up some kids at center. DND

Thats it for now, as always be sure to check for updates as players sign and prospects move up the food chain.

Coyotes sign Hanzal

Martin Hanzal, the Coyotes’ first-round pick in 2005, has signed an entry-level contract with Phoenix. The three year deal is worth between $850k an 980k per/season depending on bonuses.

In 60 games this season, Hanzal tallied 59 assists and 85 points in the WHL.

The 6-foot-5, 204-pound native of the Czech Republic was recently rated No. 30 in The Hockey News’ list of the NHL’s top 50 prospects. I would not be surprised to see him in the NHL as early as next season. The Coyotes just hired a new GM in Don Maloney, and he plans to build from within.

Hanzal should be considered for all farm teams and keeper leagues. He could even make an impact in single season leagues.

CANADIENS RE-SIGN MARKOV

Fantasy owners take note. Looks like he will play a big role on the PP next season for MTL. Now if MTL fails to sign Souray it could increase Markov's value, or at least his ice time and SOG.

For those of you that like details outside of fantasy, Markov signed for 4 years $23 million.

Team Cheat Sheet: Carolina Hurricanes

The fast rundown for draft planning. DND = Do Not Draft

Carolina Hurricanes:

Adams, Craig RW - FA match up play only. DND

Brind'Amour, Rod C - No reason to think he can't get it done next year. Solid option at center.

Carter, Anson RW - Where did his game go? Late round gamble at best, only in deep pools. I recommend a DND

Cole, Erik LW/RW - One of the best power forwards in the league. His style of play could start to add up the injuries. Solid option in all pools.

Commodore, Mike D - Always a good PIM option, last season he added points too! Worth a look in PIM leagues.

Cullen, Matt C - UPDATE He will get plenty of PP time on the point and have a chance at 20 goals and 50 points. He could blow past that total as well. He has good SOG and will play on a very talented PP.

Gleason, Tim D - Rough kid with a heavy shot. Not consistent in his game yet. DND

Grahame, John G - Even if Ward gets hurt I only like Grahame as a match up play. DND

Hamilton, Jeff C - UPDATE He has a blast from the point and could play the PP like Cullen used to. He is a decent gamble pick, late in deep pools.

Hedican, Bret D - Looks like he plans to retire. DND

Hughes, Bobby C - Not sure when he will hit the NHL, but he is very gifted. Keep an eye on him and here for updates.

Kaberle, Frantisek D - Injuries limited him last year, he is a decent assist, PPP and point D-man. Little PIMs and low SOG.

LaRose, Chad C - He gets better and better but he is still lacking value. DND

Ladd, Andrew LW - Loads of skill, this could be his breakout season. Solid keeper pick.

Letowski, Trevor RW - I'm feeling lazy on this one...DND

Seidenberg, Dennis D - No value yet. DND

Staal, Eric C - Don't let last year fool you, he is a fantasy monster. Great option at center and in all formats.

Stillman, Cory LW - Until last season you could pencil him in for a PPG average. He should bounce back next year. Decent option at LW, age is a concern.

Tanabe, David D - Has offensive upside. Keep an eye on him to see how CAR uses him next year. DND

Vasicek, Josef C - Match up play at best. DND

Walker, Scott RW - :UPDATE: Walker signed a 3 year deal to stay in CAR. He is a great power forward for PIM leagues. He often gets overlooked in drafts.

Wallin, Niclas D - DND

Ward, Cam G - I don't know if he will ever be a guy to get great reqular season stats. I'd prefer you draft someone else in net. He will get a lot of starts if thats all you need.

Wesley, Glen D - :UPDATE: He just signed a one year contract with CAR. DND

Whitney, Ray LW - Amazing year last year. He is a PP specialist. Solid option at LW if points and SOG is what you seek.

Williams, Justin RW - I love this guy, he gives you everything. I own him in all my keepers. As Stillman and Whitney move on he will get even more offensive chances down the road.

Thats it for now, as always check back for updates as players sign and prospects move up the food chain.

Is he a Goalie or a Horse?

It used to be in the NHL that a team had one goalie and they rode him all season. It has become a lot more common to either split games or give the number one more rest through the long 82 game schedule.

Many H2H leagues only require that you get "X" amount of starts a week. There are also Roto leagues and H2H leagues that give you points for a start in net. Now a goalie like Raycroft in TOR is not going to be a great pick in most fantasy pools, in ones that you just need starts he becomes extremely valuable.

Here is a cold hard list of the work horses of the NHL in net. These are the guys that make back ups think about calling Tonya Harding to see ice time.

Martin Brodeur NJD - This guy is always a #1 fantasy goalie contender.

Miikka Kiprusoff CGY - This guy is always in the same breath as Brodeur.

Roberto Luongo VAN - He gets so many starts they could dress a Sedin twin as his back up.

Andrew Raycroft TOR - Not the stud of the goalies listed above, he still gets a load of starts. He played in 72 of 82 games last season and started 71. The young kids in the prospect pool for TOR are good but should still be a year or two away from getting NHL starts.

Ryan Miller BUF - He did not get as many starts as some of the above, but with Biron out of town look for him to get about ten more starts next season.

Cam Ward CAR - He played in 60 games last season and should start more next.

Marc-Andre Fleury PIT - He played in 67 games last year and as he gets better I think he will play in even more.

Henrik Lundqvist NYR - He could see less starts next year if the NYR try to showcase Montoya. After that it should be back to the lion's share for Lundqvist.

Marty Turco DAl - He has dropped in starts the last couple of seasons, but he is capable of getting 70 any season.

Ray Emery OTT - He only played in 58 games this year, but now he has locked up the starting job he should get 65-70 starts next season.

Kari Lehtonen ATL - If ATL figures out they need to ride him and not mess with his head he could see 70+ starts. He played in 68 games last season.

Dwayne Roloson EDM - At his age he should not be getting all those starts, but if EDM does not get another goalie this summer he could get another 68 next year.

Honorable mentions that could easily go for 65+ starts:

Vesa Toskala/Evgeni Nabokov SJS - If Toskala gets traded both could become a work horse #1 guy.

Tomas Vokoun NSH - This guy is a horse, but injuries and great play by Mason last year could lead to him getting more rest. He could easily get 70 starts any season.

Manny Fernandez MIN - He will need to be traded, but if he is the team that lands him will ride him hard.

Cristobal Huet MTL - A wild card. If healthy and on his game he could be a 70 start guy. However MTL seems to like to create issues in net. Halak or Price could steal time next year.

Martin Biron PHI - I like Niity better, but I think PHI is going to ride Biron. He could get 70 starts unless he struggles and the fans start chanting for Niity and for Biron to be bought out. He is a gamble.

The guys that always seem to breakdown under a heavy load:

Manny Legace STL - Always seems to get hurt leaving managers scrambling to find a replacement.

J.S. Giguere ANH - Dehydration and cramp issues limit him getting the big load of starts. He needs a solid back up to support him.

Rick Dipietro NYI - He has a fire and desire to play all 82 games, but his body seems to top out around 60-65.

Olaf Kolzig WSH - The Caps need him to start 82 but age and injury issues limit his endurance.

Nikolai Khabibulin CHI - No question CHI wants to ride him but he has not gotten over 54 starts the last 3 seasons. Could be a good sleeper though if you want to gamble on him staying healthy.

The goalies I left off the list completely are ones that I think will only see around 50-55 starts next year or split time. Budaj in COL could easily get the bulk of the load but Theo could get starts just because he is there and making 5+ million. Its not exact science as goalies get hurt, have head issues and the next young unknown is always waiting to steal the show. This guide should help increase your odds though.
