Found a few other questions I missed.
Cydd
Hi, wasn't sure where to post my question... so if this is wrong - Sorry!
I'm new to the fantasy hockey scene... and to hockey in general. What should I look for statistics wise for each position? Example - a centre should have a high SOG, etc...
Thanks!
Cydd, welcome to the site. E-mailing me the questions is the fastest way but if you post a comment I will find it eventually :)
SOG are a good indication of a productive player. I look for goal scorers because assists are easier to manage plus Goals can give you GWGs. I also like players that play both the power play and penalty kill. You want to try for guys that get balanced stats and stats in all areas. A guy like Brenden Morrow is a great fantasy player because he gets solid numbers in all areas. Look at The 100 and at Team Cheat Sheets for more suggestions and tips. Also feel free to ask about specific players anytime.
Brian in TOR
I can't wait to have a new source for starting goalies. How do you find out your information and will it be accurate?
Brian, Starting goalies for each game are a fantasy nightmare for managers. Especially when you only have a few minutes a day to set your lineups. We use the local newspapers, beat writers and blogs as well as local radio stations and the pregame reports to find the starter for the night. It will never be 100% accurate due to the nature of the sport and position but we hope to bring at least 90% accuracy.
Guy in WSH
Is Bryzgalov worth a draft pick?
Guy, I would take Bryzgalov over a lot of the hyped prospect goalies. He has legit #1 ability and has proved himself in the playoffs with some sick stats. He should start the first few games in ANH while giggy recovers and he will be a number 1 goalie aftre the trade deadline.
Its bedtime here at Fantasy Pucks. Thank you everyone for adding to the site!

The 100
I have been getting a few requests for a general ranking of who I feel are the top ranked players in fantasy. I am normally not a fan of "top 100" lists or the like. I feel that each player taken should depend on the league format, the player drafted before your pick and your teams needs at that point in the draft. That said, I am giving in, I decided to give the readers what they want.
Here is how I view the ranks for the 2007-2008 season. I base these ranks on Goals, Assists, +/-, PIMS, PPPs and SHPs, GWGs and SOG. For the Goalies I base the ranks on Wins, Goals Against Average, Save Percentage and Shutouts. I factor in age to some extent. I also use the most important ingredient, my gut.
Understand I have a bias against centers, goalies and defensemen. I feel its easy to get beat H2H even if you have a top goalie tandom, I also feel there are so many depth centers and Dmen that they can be rotated in matchup play(in leagues with no move limits). Because of this I am not a fan of taking goalies or defensemen high. Centers are OK if they are elite.

1. Sidney Crosby C
2. Alexander Ovechkin LW - This may surprise some, but you take who has the best potential.

Selanne and Nieds would be on the list if they had announced they were playing.

Camp and Preseason Begin: Part 2
Continuing on with our look at camp and preseason names to watch for.
Florida Panthers: Florida's roster is pretty much set. David Booth looks to take on a bigger role with the club this season. Anthony Stewart(RW) and Michal Repik(RW) might battle it out to make the NHL. Stewart has a heavy shot and is a strong player that hits anything that moves. If he makes the NHL club he could be a valuable player in deep PIM leagues. Noah Welch(D) will have a chance to prove his worth as well. We will also get a look at Cory Murphy(D) as a power play quarterback. Perhaps the preseason can give us a hint if he is worth all those "sleeper pick" articles about him.
Los Angeles Kings: The usual suspects are here. Patrick O'Sullivan(C) should play wing this season. Anze Kopitar(C) will look to improve on a great rookie season. Dustin Brown(LW) will have to show more consistency. Kyle Calder(LW) could outwork Nagy(LW) and sneak some ice time away from him. Jack Johnson(D), Jonathan Bernier(G), Lauri Tukonen(RW), Brian Boyle(C) and Marc-Andre Cliche(RW) will all have a chance to impress and earn roster spots or at least call ups. Jack Johnson will likely have the biggest fantasy impact of the rookies this season for LA. I will be watching the net for LA. Cloutier, Labarbera, Aubin are all batteling for playing time and Bernier could come in and steal the #1 job pretty easily.
Minnesota Wild: Josh Harding(G), James Sheppard(C) and Petr Kalus(RW) have been lighting up camp. Harding is going to push for the number one job this year and Kalus and Sheppard seem to be the only new young guys that will make the roster. Sorry Voloshenko and Pouliot, I don't think you will make the NHL out of camp this year. Kurtis Foster(D) and Brent Burns(D) will be fighting for ice. Burns is the favorite here after Foster spent most of last year hurt or in the dog house. Don't count Foster out, anyone with his size and cannon from the blueline could go on a tear.
Montreal Canadiens: The name on everyones lips in Montreal is Kostitsyn. He has simply dominated camp so far, and I am talking Andre Kostitsyn(LW) not Sergei. Sergei Kostitsyn(RW) is still a year or two away. Mathieu Carle(D) is not expected to be on the team after cuts but he is making a strong showing in camp and has good fantasy value in the future. Everyone is watching Huet, Halak and Price battle it out in net. The Montreal media is killing Halak and Huet by saying Montreal has no legit #1 goaltender. Price is very young and has not looked as good in camp as some had hoped. Huet will be the man out of camp and will put up good numbers on what could be a bad team.
Nashville Predators: I'll be frank, there is no one in this camp that I think is worth a fantasy look this season or to lock down in a keeper league for the future. Thats on offense, on defense Cody Franson might bloom into a good fantasy player one day, but don't look for him to make the NHL this season out of camp. I am one of the people that does not have faith in Chris Mason(G) to carry the team in net. Pekka Rinne(G) will serve as a backup to Mason this season and could earn more playing time and eventually take over. Rinne's game has developed in the AHL and the Nashville franchise now has high hope sfor his future. Rinne is worth keeping and eye on.
New Jersey Devils: The departure of Scot Gomez(C) and Brian Rafalski(D) will leave some holes to plug this season. Camp and preseason will go a long way to reveal who will step up. A report today that Jamie Langenbrunner(RW) could need surgery will open up a spot for Nicklas Bergfors(RW), David Clarkson(RW) or Barry Tallackson(RW) to fill. Bergfor's has the most offensive ability and is best fit to fill into a top 6 role. He may be returning to Sweden so camp will tell us a lot. Tallackson skated with Parise and Gionta today. The Devils will be looking for a big season from Patrick Elias(C/LW) and fantasy owners will be too. Look for Travis Zajac(C) to have a bigger season this year, no sophomore slump for this youngster. Andy Greene(D) is expected to take over some of the ice and PP point time that Rafalski left open. Greene could be a great sleeper in many leagues.
New York Rangers: The guys fighting to make the team that will have legit fantasy impact this season are Nigel Dawes(LW), Ryan Callahan(RW) and Alex Bourret(RW). Guys looking to make a strong showing for consideration later in the year and the future are AL Montoya(G) and Bobby Sanguineitti(D). Marc Staal(D) has a real chance to make the club this year and his scoring ability will be something to look for in preseason.
New York Islanders: Lets start with a guy that won't be in camp or preseason. I have to mention Kyle Okposo(RW). If you don't have him on your keeper team, get him! If nothing horrific happens in his life he will be a fantasy monster. Jeff Tambellini(LW), Robert Nielsen(C) and Sean Bergenheim(LW) will be looking to make an impact this season. Look for Tambellini to be the most valuable of these names and maybe the most valuable LW on the team this year. Mike Comrie(C) is looking to have a career season and prove his worth. Guerin and Satan should be stable fantasy producers as well. Marc-Andre Bergeron(D) and Chris Campoli(D) could be big impact fantasy players this season for points. Bergeron more so than Campoli who still needs to prove himself.
Ottawa Senators: Eyes should be on Martin Gerber(G) who will be getting the starts while Ray Emery(G) recovers from wrist surgery. Gerber will be trying to steal the #1 job or earn a teams trust so they trade for him. Josh Henessey(C), Nick Foligno(LW) and Brian Lee(D) have the best chance to make this team out of camp. There is still an open RW spot on the top line and the SENs will be trying anybody and everyone on it to find chemistry. Antoine Vermette(C/LW) is on everyones breakout list. With top minutes skating with top talent its a make or break season for Vermette. I expect him to respond. While we are speaking of make or break, Patrick Eaves(RW) could see his value shoot through the roof this season or he could be viewed as an injury filler by fantasy managers. Mike Fisher(C) is being held back to heal from a groin injury but there shoudl be no concern there yet.
Philadelphia Flyers: Lots of things to look for from Flyers camp. Most important, who will play with Briere and Gagne. Knuble has been skating with that line so far but anything could happen. Joffry Lupul(RW), Scottie Upshall(RW) and Scott Hartnell(LW/RW) will all be looking for minutes and all have the ability to put up numbers. Prospects that could make this squad are Steve Downie(C), Claude Giroux(RW), Ryan Parent(D), Braydon Coburn(D) and Alexander Picard(D). All of these guys are worth eying in your league as PHI is wide open. Jeff Carter(C) should enjoy a bounce back season with Lupul this year and both are solid fantasy drafts.
Phoenix Coyotes: Mueller, Mueller, Mueller and did I mention, Mueller? Peter Mueller(C) will be stepping into the #1 center role for the 'Yotes. He is there to give the fans hope for the future and to gain valuable experience. Most sites have been projecting him at 40pts this season. I think 60-70 is realistic. Watch for how he handles preseason to get a feel for his effectiveness. With Mueller is Martin Hanzal(C/LW) he will be given every chance to make this club and to get ice time. Keith Yandle(D) will be trying to brwak into a very deep blueline for the'Yotes. If he does he has the ability to put up numbers. All of the Dmen for PHX can play the PP, put up PIMs and score goals. They are among the deepest Dcore in the NHL but they still struggle in the defensive end. Great fantasy numbers but horrible +/-. If your league does not count +/- then feel free to draft anybody from the PHX Dmen. Daniel Carcillo(LW) was on pace for 30pts 300+PIMs after his trade to PHX last year. I don't expect him to continue that pace but in PIM leagues he could be a monster.
Pittsburgh Penquins: DRAFT THEM ALL! Just kidding, sort of... Look for break out seasons from Eric Christensen(C/LW) and Kris Letang(D). Angelo Esposito(C) was a long shot to make the team this season because of business reasons as well as his age. Now with a bad groin injury its certain he will return to juniors and continue to learn how to play the wing. Keep an eye on Filewich and Stone in camp. They have been doing very well and could replace injured players or even lead to the trade of Ryan Malone. Malone traded? PIT fans have never heard that one before.
San Jose Sharks: Some names to look for fighting for a roster spot this year are Devin Setoguchi(RW), Lukas Kaspar(LW), Thomas Greiss(G), Taylor Dakers(G) and Dimitri Patzold(G). If Setoguchi makes the club it could hurt Bernier's value. If Kapar makes the club it could impact Clowe's value. Greiss won't make the NHL unless Nabakov gets hurt. He is vulnerable to waivers. Look for Patzold to backup in net this season but for Greiss to be the starter if Nabby gets hurt. Any forward that makes the Sharks has value and should be picked up.
St. Louis Blues: Erik Johnson(D) looks to be the center of all attention at camp and preseason. His fantasy value has great upside and he is worth a lok this season in all pools. Patrik Berglund(C) will have the chance to make the Blues but if he doesn't, look for him to return to Sweden. If Berglund makes the Blues he is worth a look in deep pools and certainly in keeper leagues. David Perron(LW) is looking to go from draft to the NHL and has the skills to do it. Especially on a Blues team desperate for offense. If he makes the team he could have fantasy impact right away. Hannu Toivonen and Manny Legace will be battling for minutes. Toivonen wants to push Legace for starts and management wants that too. Legace has not played more than 55 games in the recent past so Toivonen should get several quality starts this season. David Backes(C) could figure into a bigger scoring role this season as well. If he catches fire in the preseason he will carry that over into the real season.
Tampa Bay Lightning: TB scouts are waiting in Edmonton to give plan tickets to any of the Chicago beat writers that don't make the Oil. After being cut by CHI and EDM the beat writers will likely return to CHI to take up writing again when they learn how much TB is willing to spend on their salaries. I joke because there is nothing here to look at besides what iffy goalie wins the starting job. Ramo, Denis, Holmqvist? Even if a guy wins #1 he will get pulled and benched aftre the first soft goal that slips past him. This team needed a winger so bad they gave a contract to Micheal Ouellet(RW). Ouellet could be worth a look in deep leagues since he will have plenty of talent to leech from, just like his PIT days.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Leaf nation has been guaranteed a playoff spot by Paul Maurice. I guess Maurice liked what he saw in camp. We need to watch Toskala and Raycroft to see if one of them can outplay the other for starts in net. We also need to watch for what the line combos might be. Ponikarovsky(LW) had a good season playing with Antropov(C) and Sundin(C) for stretches. The arrival of Jason Blake(LW) could bump Poni down. We also have to keep an eye on Jiri Tlusty(C) who is running out of time in the eyes of TOR management. Lets not forget Mark Bell(LW) who won't be in the mix until his 15 game suspension is up. He is capable of goals and PIMs if he can fit into the team. Steen will need to increase his production to reward keeper owners who have held the 1st line projected player.
Vancouver Canucks: The big question will be who wins the Sedin lottery. We will have to keep an eye on that. New arrival Ryan Shannon(C/RW) is hoping to get a chance and so is Jannik Hansen(RW). Mason Raymond was electric in rookie camp nut its too hard to tell if he can keep that up on the NHL level. Alexander Elder(D) and Luc Bourdon(D) will be fighting for the 7th D spot. Both are solid fantasy options in keeper leagues. Especially since VAN Dmen always factor into their offense. Keep an eye on Cory Schneider(G) if anything happens to Luongo.
Washington Capitals: Eric Fehr's hip/back injury has camp a buzz. His RW slot next to Ovechkin is now open for all to try for. Front runners for this job are Thomas Fleischmann(C) and Francois Bouchard(RW). Tom Poti could show us his value in the preseason and look for Brian Pothier to show us a better game. Karl Alzner(D) likely won't make the club this season, but he can still wow them in camp. Varlamov(G) went back to Russia leaving the door open for Michal Neuvirth(G) to take the reins on the top goalie prospect title. If Kolzig gets hurt again this season look for Neuvirth to get a look in the NHL.
Thats a fast look for now. I will post fantasy news worthy material as they become available out of camp!

Jamie Langenbrunner to need surgery?
According to sources New Jersey Devil's RW, Jamie Langenbrunner may require surgery to deal with a groin injury. It could require hernia surgery.
Fantasy owners take note of this before your drafts. If you have already drafted him hope for the IR slot and look for a replacement.
This should open up a spot on a scoring line for the NJ Devils to get a look at Clarkson, Tallackson and Bergfors.
Tallackson is the biggest but lacks consistency. Claskson is a hard working forward but lacks some offensive skills. Bergfors is the most talented but it remains to be seen if he is ready for the NHL yet.
Tallackson skated with Parise and Gionta today.

Ride the Dark Horse: Daniel Carcillo
Daniel Carcillo LW/PHX is a feisty player. Sticking with the PHX theme of Hanzal as a dark horse, Carcillo showed some offensive flare after arriving in PHX by a trade from PIT. Carcillo posted 7 pts and 74 PIMs in 18 games played as well as 32 SOG.
If you expand those numbers you have a player that would be worth more than Sean Avery in PIM leagues. It is unlikely that Carcillo will continue that type of scoring, but it is highly likely that he will continue that rate of PIMs.
By all accounts PHX is expected to be bad this year, and we all know bad nights equal tempers and fights. Carcillo will be able to get 150+ PIMs this season and if he can earn some PP time he coudl even put up some points to make him worth a regular roster spot.

Ride the Dark Horse: Martin Hanzal
Martin Hanzal - C/LW for the Phoenix Coyotes is only 20 years old. He stands at 6'5" and 208 lbs. He does need to add some strength and muscle to his big frame but this talented big man has all the tools.
Hanzal will have a chance to make the team out of camp this season and if he does he could prove a fantasy dark horse.
Hanzal has proved inconsistent in the past when it has come to scoring points, and its possible he will turn into a shut down forward.
What favors him in the NHL is his size in the new rules. He has a decent hockey sense and above average instincts in the offensive zone. He will need to improve his defensive zone coverage and could suffer a bad +/- this season. Also in his favor is the complete lack of offense in PHX. Hanzal and Mueller will get the chance to take over this team and with Doan to help protect them, they could shine.
For points and PPPs he could be a real gem in your draft or on the FA wire.

Player Breakdown: Sean Avery
Sean Avery-LW plays for the New York rangers. Avery is small at 5'9" but he does weigh 200 lbs. Last year Avery was listed as a LW/C/RW in Yahoo and could gain that status again this season. His on and off ice tactics are well documented and its very common for teams to forget they are playing hockey when he is on the ice. Instead they focus on following him around and taking shots at him. If everyone loves Joe Sakic then everyone hates Avery. A lot of his past teammates have hated him as well.
Avery is in a contract year, and he is playing for big money. He felt wronged by the Rangers in his arbitration hearing and he has a lot to prove. Avery would like nothing more than to prove them wrong and then leave NY for big money. Leaving the NY fans mad at management.
Last year Avery posted numbers of 18 goals, 30 assists for 48 points in 84 games(not a typo, he had two extra games due to the trade that landed him in NY). Avery was a +1 and posted a godly 174 PIMs. He had 15 PPPs and 2 SHPs. He also added 2 GWGs and a solid 249 SOG.
Its safe to say all of his stats will go up this season and it looks like Avery is a lock for the second scoring line.
There is no better forward in fantasy hockey for PIMs/pts. There are some that will give you more PIMs but they do not come close to the other stats Avery brings.

Q & A Segment 9/15/07
The preseason is underway and its time to get some of these questions out there.
Jeff in Conn
I saw that Calder had 2 goals for LA against the ducks. Should I draft him? I am in a single season pool, points only.
Jeff, Calder will be far better than he was last year. That said he still has Nagy and Frolov in front of him on LW for PP time. Calder will be a solid player in deep leagues but he certainly won't be someone to rely on for a title. As for his 2 goals, Abid had a few goals for Nashville last year too!
Nike in Third World Country
These kids got all our skates made ahead of time so I had time to do some fantasy research. I am in a keeper and our draft has seen Toews, Backstrom and Price go early. I have the 7th pick and the players I am thinking about are Mueller, Oshie, Sheppard, O'Sullivan. Who should I take?
I'd lean toward O'Sullivan or Mueller here. I have Mueller on mine team and I like him a lot. Sheppard has a bunch of potential but I don't like how MIN plays young guys(I have Sheppard on my team too). Oshie won't be in the NHL this year so I would wait and hope to get him in next years draft.
Kenny in EDM
What young guy should I draft from my Oil? Nilsson, Shremp, Cogliano or Gagner? I have been burned by drafting Schremp the last two seasons!
Kenny, of that group I think Nilsson will get the most points this season. If you are drafting for the future I might go with Cogliano and then Gagner. Nilsson is most sure thing for this season.
Marek in Greene
I have Connolly, Havlat and Gaborick on my team. Our draft just ended and nobody took Forsberg. I know he is your favorite player, so should I add him?
Marek, I would wait until he signs somewhere or he is at least in legit talks to return. Thats an interesting group you assembled. You might be the best team in your leage for the three weeks they all play at the same time.
Phil in IND
Last year I got beat in the playoffs because of some circus clown named Koci. Will he be in the NHL this year and should I draft him?
Phil, I feel your pain. That is a hard way to go down. Koci will be fighting for a roster spot on the Blackhawks. He is definitely worth a very late round pick in deep PIM leagues. I would use him in a matchup play role and avoid drafting him. I'd prefer to go with a guy like D. Carcillo for PHX if he is available.
Gerry in Coviello Cove
The fall is settling in and my keeper farm team draft is approaching. I am thinking about Alzner or Hickey for my first defenseman pick. Which one would you take?
Gerry, it depends on what your need is. If you need points then Hickey is the better way to go. Alzner shoudl have a better +/- and PIMs. Hickey will get more SOG. I think Alzner will be NHL ready sooner and he could still develop his offensive skills. I would gamble on Alzner based on the talent pool he will be playing with.
Jim in San Jose
What shark should I draft. Available are Bernier, Clowe, Pavelski or Erhoff?
Jim, I would go with Ehrhoff or Bernier. I would take Bernier first unless you are in need of a Dman. I like Bernier's upside this season over the rest.
Sal
I noticed on your site you highlighted Mark Bell as a comeback kid. Should I draft him given his recent suspension?
Sal, I do think Bell will put up good numbers when he gets back, but I don't think you will need to draft him. I would take him last or add him from the FA list if he does not get drafted. He will be NA to start the year and you can roto that slot or use it with another player to get stats in that time. I'd look to add him when he has served about 11 games of the 15 suspension.
Ben in OTT
I have the number two pick this season. We are doing an E-mail draft and the kid who had number one took Crosby. Who should I take? I want to take Heatly because I am in OTT.
Ben, you can't go wrong taking Heatly. I would still take Ovechkin. Ovy might have players outscore him but when you add the SOG and PIMs he can bring, he helps all around. I am also a big Malkin fan. I could see Malkin putting up a 100/100 season(points and PIMs)
Screwed in Washington
I just learned Eric Fehr is down and out still. I paid a lot for him last season when I fell out of the playoff race. Who should I get to replace him?
Thats not much information to go on. If you want the RW in WSH you could try F. Bouchard and see if he makes the team. Injuries could lead to Bergfors getting a spot at RW with the NJ Devils. List some of the RWs available and I will name the top guy to target.
Garth in NH
Modin or Ponikarovsky? G/A/+/-/PPP/PIM/SHP/GWG.
Garth, Modin is the better scorer but Poni showed some flashes with Sundin last year. They are basically the same player so I will pick Poni because he is younger and should get more PIMs.
Skid Row
I have Huet in net as my main guy. Should I be worried?
Huet will start the season number one. He could get killed by the media if he struggles and he could even get traded. I think he is a solid fantasy goalie but he might suffer in MTL. If he gets traded his value might increase. I would pick up Price if he is available for insurance. Forget Halak.
Zander in Cali
I drafted Wolski in my keeper. Will his numbers improve this year?
Zander, I think Wolski could struggle behind Smyth and Brunette. It is all up to Wolski, if he works hard he will demand ice time and could take over the 2nd line spot. I expect Wolski's numbers to drop some this season unless Brunette gets hurt. Don't panic, he is a great keeper and has the skill to net 50 one day. If he ever gets 50 depends on his effort.
Jack in BOS
What happened to this site? Its never updated anymore.
Jack, Sorry for the laps in updates. Now that the season is here you can expect daily updates.
Angela in NJ
Are you friends with the Arrogant Puck? He seems like an a$$hole. Who will replace Rafalski's production?
Angela, I assure you that the Arrogant Punk is an a$$hole but he is fun to be around. I would look to Andy Greene to pick up minutes and PP time in NJ this season. He could be a good sleeper, especially in deeper pools.
Dave in NYC
Why do so many sites make you pay for their fantasy information and why do you do it for free? Do you do Football?
Dave, I hate the idea of people paying for my opinion. I also think its a complete rip off for these other sites to repackage the same information each season and sell it. Rarely do they go out on a limb or predict anything that could not be read elsewhere. It is hard to be original, and I hope I offer enough of a difference from other sites to make this one worth the read. Don't pay for fantasy advice! I will answer anything for free!!! Sorry, I don't have Football advice. I play fantasy football but i am a novice. I got this Gem that some sites might make you pay for. LT is pretty good.
Jason in Calgary
I missed my live draft and now I feel like I got screwed. I did end up with Luongo and Kipper so should I trade them for offense? If so, who can I target? I got no one ranked in the top 15 for forwards.
Jason, I would target whatever manager has the weakest net. Offer him just one goalie and ask for his top offensive player + a solid second player. Negotiate from there but notify the league that you are willing to trade one of your goalies and sort through the best offers.

Camp and PreSeason Begin: Part 1
Hockey is back and our long suffering is over. We will take a look at the names that have been buzzing around camp and who to keep an eye on.
Anaheim Ducks: The main man to keep an eye on here is Bobby Ryan(RW). With Selanne(RW) uncertain and Bertuzzi's(RW) health an ongoing concern this could finally be his year to break into the NHL. There should be room on the RW for Ryan this season. Drew Miller(LW) who played well in an energy role in the playoffs last year will be fighting for a spot on the fourth line. He could be worth keeping an eye on if he makes it to the NHL.
Atlanta Thrashers: The Thrashers have a hand full of young players looking to make the roster out of camp, and a few others worth putting on your radar for the future. Bryan Little(C) could fill the void Atlanta has at center. He could give the the number one scoring center they have been lacking since Savard (C) left town. He is young and has a lot to prove but he could earn a role in the NHL this season and get key minutes with legit fantasy studs. Brett Sterling(LW) could find himself on the LW in the NHL with a strong showing at camp. Atlanta could use some scoring punch, and while they brought in Todd White(C) he could center the third line with Kozlov(LW/C) centering Hossa(RW) and Sterling. Todd White is also worth keeping an eye on, he has good speed and can set up plays. Tobias Enstrom(D) has shown he is excellent at moving the puck and he is more than capable of anchoring the PP. He will have to earn a spot on this team, but even if he does not make the squad out of camp, look for him to be called up for regular work in season. Ondrej Pavelec(G) could put pressure on Lehtonen this season. Lehtonen has to prove he is the legit goaltender he is capable of being. When he struggled last year Hedberg came in to take minutes, this season if Pavelec is dominating in the AHL and Lehtonen is struggling don't be surprised to see a call up.
Boston Bruins: With my man crush Petr Kalus(RW) traded, I did not have much interest in Boston's camp this year. However, it is my duty to give you my take on them. There is no real fantasy impact guys in camp this season. Mark Stuart(D) could make the big club on D but his value will not be worth a draft pick. David Krejci(C) is a very talented offensive center but he will likely be left in Providence to work on his game with big minutes. Boston is too deep at center right now for him to crack he lineup. He could be converted to play RW if Boston gets hit by injuries or trades Glen Murray(RW) later in the season. Tuuka Rask(G) is a name all Fernandez owners should know.
Buffalo Sabers: Buffalo might finally learn their lesson and try harder to lock up future UFAs. There will be some openings on this roster this season to earn and several potential injuries that could open up spots later in the season. Drew Stafford(RW) is hardly a prospect anymore, but how he does in camp will go a long way to tell us what line and role he will be used in. Stafford is a must have in fantasy pools. In single season leagues he is a later pick, in keepers he can be taken much higher. Clarke MacArthur(C), Daniel Paille(LW), Marek Zagrapan(C), and Nathan Paetsch(D) and Andrej Sekera(D) are all worth looking out for. Paetsch is a lock for more ice and a bigger role this season and is a valuable fantasy player to own. Paille is projected as a third line winger but he could make an impact on a high octane BUF squad. The centers value will be determined in camp and if Tim Connolly(C) can stay healthy.
Calgary Flames: Not many names to look for here. David Moss(LW) could continue his strong play and earn a role with this club. If he learns to use his 6'3" size more to go along with a nice goal scoring touch he could not only earn some top 6 minutes, he could earn a spot on fantasy rosters. If Matthew Lombardi(C) struggles then look for Dustin Boyd(C) to get a look this season. He could earn a role on this team out of camp but it seems more likely he will go back and forth with the AHL this year. With Darren Macarty(RW) off the team a player like Brandon Prust(RW) could be worth an add in PIM leagues. If the name Sean Avery(LW) means anything to you than Prust is worth a look. He will not score the points that Avery does, but he could certainly land you the PIMs. Leland Irving(G) is a name worth knowing. He is a very skilled goalie and could be the future of the Flames. Kipper's contract talks will impact his long term value.
Carolina Hurricanes: This camp is bare. There are no names that stir excitement in the fantasy manager's belly and no names worth mentioning here. For the sake of putting something out there, Brandon Sutter(C) could fight and claw his way on this team, but that is very unlikely. Thats it, thats the list. For all you people out there that look at Ray Whitney(LW) and Cory Stillman's(LW) numbers and think Andrew Ladd(LW) could pick up if they get hurt, forget it. Ladd is a nice player for deep fantasy pools and a solid looking power forward. That said he has not proven he can score the puck and will need to prove not only that he can score but that he can be consistent. I am not saying he can't do it, but I don't think he will do it in time to help your fantasy team this season.
Chicago Blackhawks: Can some rookies make the team out of camp? Hell, I think some of the beat writers in the stands watching camp could make the squad. I think its safe to assume at this point you know of Jonathan Toews(C) and Patrick Kane(RW) , but in case its not safe! These two will make the NHL and are going to have loads of ice to prove they can hang. Toews should be worth a fantasy roster spot in all leagues, Kane is more suited for keeper leagues but might prove worth a roster spot in single season pools if he can overcome his lack of size and learn the NHL game fast. Dave Bolland(C) is a guy that might make the team. He received some ice in the NHL last year and has good two-way skills. While he won't offer much fantasy help this season, he could prove valuable in the future. Bolland does not hold long term value enough to be kept in a keeper though. Not at this point in his career. Kris Versteeg(LW) who came over in the Brandon Bochenski(RW) deal could earn a spot on LW. Chicago is not deep here and Rene Bourque(LW) will have to earn all the ice he gets. If Kane can't handle the NHL look for Troy Brouwer(RW) or Jack Skille to get the call up. They could even make the team out of camp. Both players are strong power forwards with Brouwer owning a better all around game and better offensive touch. Skille and Bouwer will get some looks at the NHL this season so management can assess their development. Cam Barker(D) should be ready for full time NHL action this season.
Colorado Avalanche: Three players stand out in my mind that could have a fantasy impact. Though the team is deep on the scoring lines, T.J. Hensick(C) and Chris Stewart(RW) and Kyle Cumiskey(D) could fight their way onto the roster. Colorado also brought in Jaroslav Hlinka(C/LW) who is worth keeping an eye on in camp. Hlinka could be a top line player or a complete bust, hats the range he could fall into. Stewart was one of the last cuts from camp last season, but with the club extending Ian Laperriere(C/RW) Stewart would likely start out on the 4th line. If Svatos(RW) struggles or lands in the dog house then Stewart could take his ice time. Stewart is a solid power forward who can score goals. Kyle Cumiskey(D) is a name all fantasy owners can appreciate. While that has little to do with his value, he is a very gifted offensive Dman and Colorado has a rich history of top fantasy D. He needs to get better in his own end to stick in the NHL but he could be a sleeper.
Columbus Blue Jackets: Two names pop out for fantasy value here. Derrick Brassard(C) and Jakob Voracek(RW). In addition Kris Russel(D), Gilbert Brule(C) and Alex Picard(LW) are also worth watching in camp. Mainly to see what lines they are being used with and in Russel's case, how he looks on the PP. Russel is a great sleeper in fantasy pools. Picard is more likely a plug in player and Brule has yet to live up to his hype. Voracek has the skill to play in the NHL right now, but making a squad at his age under Hitchcock will be difficult. He could see a nine game tryout but expect him to return to Juniors after that. Brassard will be given every chance to make this squad and could find himself the #1 center before the year is done. He has exceptional offensive skills and might be the thing Rick Nash(LW) needs to get going. I am also interested to see what Zherdev shows up at camp.
Dallas Stars: Loui Eriksson(LW) is the main guy I want to see in camp. He has the ability to be a big time goal scorer in the NHL and it will be interesting to see if his game improved this summer. I am also interested in seeing how Brenden Morrow(LW) looks after missing most of last season. Mike Riberio (C) and Mike Modano(C) will be interesting to watch. Will Modano have slowed down and will Riberio show consistency to challenge for the #1 center role? Antti Miettinen(LW/RW) could finaly gain more consistency to his play and earn more minutes. How he looks in camp and preseason could determine if he even gets the chance. Miettinen looked good when he played with Morrow last season and could be a dark horse. Mike Smith(G) will be looking to put pressure on Marty Turco(G) again this season. If you own Turco you should own Smith for insurance.
Detroit Red Wings: Detroit is a hot bed for fantasy players. Even the role players pitch in enough points and help in +/- to be worth a roster spot. Here are the names you should watch for in camp to land on a top scoring line. Daniel Cleary(LW/RW), Jiri Hudler(C), Valterri Filppula(C), Igor Grigorenko(RW) Mikael Samuelsson(RW). Cleary revived his NHL career last year and could look to build on that. I would say he is good for 20 goals and 50 points with more possible if on the right line. Samuelsson has proven he has good goal scoring skills, but he has also shown he is a stable 40-50pt guy. Hudler and Filppula have loads of upside and if converted to wing or receive PP time could see their fantasy values skyrocket. Keep a close eye on them in camp. Grigorneko has been scouted as a top line prospect and a 3rd line prospect. The Yahoo Draft Kit predicted he would net 48 goals this season. I think Grigorenko has world class skill and the ability to score 30+ goals but 48 is lofty. He came into camp out of shape and he should see some time in the AHL for conditioning and to work and parts of his game. Grigorenko will get a real shot playing on a top line this year and its worth watching his chemistry with Zetterberg and Daytsuk in preseason. On defense Kyle Quincy and Brett Lebda will be worth watching. They will be competing for ice and PP time with each other and both could be worth a late draft for +/- and some poits/PIMs.
Edmonton Oilers: I have it from a good source that the Chicago beat writes that don't make the Blackhawks will be flying to EDM to try out for RW. Seriously, this roster is wide open. The draw back is MacT does not like playing young guys. This could be the make or break season for Rob Schremp(C) in EDM. Robert Nilsson(LW) could be converted to RW and seems a lock to make the club, so could Schremp for that matter. Nilsson will be a solid fantasy player in deep pools and coul even approach 70 points. Sam Gagner and Andrew Cogliano will be looking to impress as well. We will get to see what Penner and Hemsky look like together and I am betting they try many different centers with them. I look for most of the EDM players to improve this season and a player like Raffi Torres still has 25+ goal potential to go along with his always healthy PIM totals. Marc-Antoine Pouliot(C) is another young guy that could stick this season, though I would not place much fantasy value on him. With Souray and Pitkanen on the PP points look for a guy like Schremp, a PP specialist, to show what he has this preseason.
