Q & A Segment 10/06/07

Its Saturday and its beautiful outside. No fancy intro. Lets do this...

Sam
I played Hagman last night and he has put me ahead in GWGs. Thanks to your advice! He has two goals in two games. Should I drop him for a new roto spot or hold onto him?

Sam, If thats your roto spot then keep it open. Hagman is going to have a career year but that does not mean he is worth holding a roster spot for. The hardest part of the roto style is looking back at the guys that went through your roster. You will lose potential keepers and miss extended hot streaks. Thats the nature of the beast. No looking back.

Max in EDM
I have Vokoun and Luongo as my goalies. I am getting killed H2H this week because of it. Should I be panicked on Vokoun? Should I pick up one of these goalies on the wire for help? Garon, Tellqvist, Leclaire.

Max, I would not panic. Those studs will be just fine. Garon and Tellqvist will have some good games this year, but they won't help you this week H2H so I would wait. Leclaire might be worth an add. If he can stay healthy he could be very good, or at least get you a trade if he builds on his SO.

Val in Houston
Miettinen is playing with Morrow and Modano. He looks pretty good but no points to show for it. Is he worth an add over Satan, Ryder or Kobasew?

Val, I drafted Miettinen last year in my deep keeper. He was my last pick and I was hoping for a break out year. That didn't come. Bottom line is he looks great but does not produce consistently. I might add him over Kobasew though. Kobasew did have 3 SOG playing on line two, but he is injury prone and has never figured out how to produce each night. Give it a couple more games and then make the switch.

Jake in BUF
As a Sabers fan I drafted Miller as my first goalie. Single season pool. My secondary goalie is Toskala. I loaded up on offense like you said but I did take Miller in the second round. I didn't like what I saw last night. Am I screwed in net?

Jake, you are not screwed. You will need your offense to carry you but that combo should put up moderate numbers to get you points in goalie stats. Miller could have a high GAA this year but he will get wins and so should Toskala. Let me know what goalies are on your wire. There might be a hidden gem to help pad your stats.

Anonymous
I drafted Backstrom in the first round. This is a single season pool and I could use some offense. Should I trade Backstrom now that he has a SO? My other goalies are Vokoun and Lundqvist.

Thats a solid sounding goalie core. Vokoun will balance out. He has traditionally started slow. I would trade Backstrom for all you can get and add Harding if he is a FA in your league.

There seems to be a lot of goalie questions. Remember these are just one or two games. In some cases its just being in the wrong building for another teams opening night. There is no need to panic yet. Its a long season.

Thats it. Thanks for the questions everyone. Keep them coming.

Leclaire got the SO for Columbus last night but Norrena was scheduled to start this game. Hitch could go with Leclaire again to reward him for the SO.

The Arrogant Puck gets one on the nose

The Arrogant Puck was telling me all summer he expected Mike Comrie to have a good season this year. He didn't even know where he was going to sign at that point, but he was insistent that Comrie was OTT best player down the stretch and would carry that over.

Once Comrie signed for the NYI it was clear he was going to get lots of ice and be the goto #1 center. The Arrogant Puck was excited to get Comrie in our draft and he fell to him in the middle of the draft, just like AP had hoped.

Comrie is a young guy still with lots of experience in the NHL. He is hungry playing for a contract and he wants to prove he can be an elite player in this league. the AP sang all these praises and as the preseason hit, Comrie was tearing it up.

The question still remained if he could do it once the games were for real. I know BUF plays a wide open style but Comrie clicked with Guerin and Fedotenko. Comrie will be a big time fantasy point getter this season. He might even still be on your wire in shallow leagues.

I have maintained Guerin was a good pick, but it looks like Fedotenko will be a solid pick too if he can stick on the top line. He is worth a look in deep leagues if he is still available.

Hat tip to AP on this one!

Roenick nets two

Jeremy Roenick (SJS-C) had a good fantasy night for himself. There is no need to rush to add him to your fantasy team.

Roenick played well and got himself into good position to finish the two goals. He is on borrowed time on line two. Setoguchi will be back soon enough and then JR will be bumped down lines.

JR also got nailed behind the net, turned it over and made bad passes. He is not a fantasy option for more than one night.

Slim Pickings

The NHL only gives us one game on Sunday. Sunday is normally the slimmest pickings for roto throughout the season.

Roto Ideas are usually whoever you can get from the two teams. They are easy to find on the wire and chose who meets your needs best.

Craig Rivet (SJS-D) PPPS, PIMS, +/-, points maybe a SOG or two.

Tyler Arnason (COL-C) SOG, points

Jeremy Roenick (SJS-C) SOG, points.

Mike Grier (SJS-RW) SHPs, SOG, points, PIMs.

Kyle Mclaren (SJS-D) PIMs, slim shot at points and SOG.

Ian Laperriere (COL-RW) PIMs, SOG, points.

Brett Clark (COL-D) SOG, points.

If these guys are gone just take whoever is available.

good luck tonight! If you added Hagman or Lucic last night they rewarded you. There were busts as well, but thats how the life of a roto star works.

Ouch that hurts! Injuries from last night

Martin Havlat (CHI-RW/LW) Hurt his shoulder and could be out a long time. I will update as soon as I can. There is no Hawk player worth adding that is going to fill his void. Maybe Kane if its single season leagues. Likely he won't be consistent enough to help.

Shea Weber (NSH-D) Suffered a dislocated kneecap. He will be out 3-6 weeks. Ryan Suter could be a good replacement until he returns. Ville Koistinen could be an even better one if NSH gives him Weber's PP time. I will update how they look vs Dallas. Look for Zidlicky to get more PP ice now and a boost in production.

for a more complete look at injured players check out TSN. TSN Injury Report

Chris Mason tries to prove me wrong

OK, so Chris Mason (NSH-G) probably has no clue who I am or that I dogged him all summer and last year. I called a trade in my keeper of W. Wolski (COL-LW) 4 Mason straight up (right when Vokoun got back from IR) the "worst trade I had seen in one of my leagues". Less than a year later that deal looks decent and I look a fool for speaking out. Wolski could still prove better but its far from the one sided deal I thought.

Despite all the turn over in NSH and all the controversy, NSH put in a strong effort versus a very strong offensive team (granted COL was playing the back end of b2b nights). Mason looked great in net and posted a shutout. The Nashville team played Trotz hockey and Arnott looked great.

I am still not sold yet! Maybe I just don't want to admit I am wrong but I would move Mason for the right offer. Its a long NHL season and eventually that could catch up to Nashville playing in the west. I can still remember nights of Mason letting in 5-7 goals as a backup and I am not sold that is behind him.

NSH also lost Shea Weber on defense with a dislocated knee cap. This is another blow to the team offensively and Weber was very strong on the blueline as well.

Sell high on Mason, you won't regret it.

Mitchell the real deal in SJ

Torrey Mitchell (SJS-C) opened his NHL career last night centering the second line. While Wilson likes to juggle lines and mix and match, I think Mitchell will stick to the top six. Wilson has hurt players fantasy value in the past by his line shuffling and while Mitchell is a rookie, last nights effort showed why he should earn his top 6 slot and not be a victim of Wilson's juggling.

Mitchell played a key role on the PK, he played PP and he was all over the ice at even strength. He looked like a faster version of COL's Paul Stastny. Penciled in after preseason to center line two with Michalek and Setoguchi on his wings, his strong play allows for Marleau to play with Thornton. Montreal fans are already starting the "Mitchell allows MTL to trade use Marleau" rumors!

Wilson has shown in the past he is willing to give young players a chance to earn a key role. We only have to turn back to last season and look at Vlasic playing as a rookie on D at 19 years old.

Mitchell is a solid add in keeper leagues and has flown under the radar to this point. He won't be under the radar much longer....

Side note: JR played last night on line 2 in place of Setoguchi who is getting over an ankle injury. Setoguchi owners have no cause for panic. JR won't keep him out of the top 6.

Havlat Makes it 1 Game

The official word on Martin Havlat's (CHI-LW/RW) shoulder injury is not in yet. Fantasy managers are clicking refresh on TSN every minute with baited breathe hopoing its just a 1-2 week bruise.

The way that shoulder looke dgoing off the ice, and with its injury history...lets just say if he is out the year I would not be surprised.

If it needs surgery the entire year is a possibility and even if it does not need it, will it hold up aftre 8 weeks rest in this sport? Likely not.

I was a big supporter of drafting Havlat and trading him when he started hot. The problem is he didn't even get started this time.

I feel pretty good right now at my trade of Havlat and Hossa for Ovechkin. But I feel very badly for the real life Havlat.

Fantasy Owners should prepare their IR slots and be thinking about a replacement. Don't panic and drop him until we see official word. Odds are not with you on good news though.

Weekend Cheese

Saturday night is normally full boats for most managers. Teams usually have room for maybe one roto slot. It is usually defense that is best used as the forward slots are filled with roster players. I like to roto 4-6 slots and i have roto'd as many as 9 on a 30 man roster, but this is not realistic for most.

I will just highlight two offensive guys and 8 Dmen given Saturday's full boat for most managers. I am picking guys that are most likely available in all leagues. You might have better on your wire so give it a look when you add guys.

Ten match up ideas:

Doug Weight (STL-C) He was not impressive last night, but he has owned LA in the past. Bernier looked great in net to start the year but that LA defense is suspect. Points, PPPs, SOG.

Kris Draper (DET-C) Chicago is a mess with the injuries again. Draper could score SH in this game. SHPs, SOG, shot at points, PIMs, +/-.

Derek Morris (PHX-D) With Michalek out he will see more PP time and he looked good opening night. SOG, PIMs, points.

Mike Komisarek (MTL-D) PIMs, SHPs. I like the match up for PIMs vs TOR.

Mark Streit (MTL-D) He still is not owned in most leagues and looked great on the PP. PPPs, Points, SOG.

Nick Boynton (PHX-D) It did not take him long to get his first fight. Playing against his old team he should be riled up. PIMs.

Tom Preissing (LA-D) He is always overlooked. He looked decent for LA. PPPs, SOG, Assists.

Eric Brewer (STL-D) Better in real life than fantasy he could be good vs LA for PPPs, points, PIMs.

Dan Hamhuis (NSH-D) He looked strong last game and Weber could be out. PPPs, Points, SOG, +/-.

Brett Lebda (DET-D) I like this kids game and VS CHI he is going to have a shot at all stats.

Vokoun FLA VS Lundqvist NYR

Toskala TOR VS Gerber OTT

Broduer NJD VS Holmqvist TB (check back for updates)

Budaj COL VS Mason NSH

Khabibulin CHI VS Backstrom MIN

Nabakov SJS VS Roloson EDM

Check back before tonights games. Updates will be posted as they become available. Tellqvist, Budaj, Gerber, Holmqvist , Legace could all be different as the day goes by.

Players to snag for Friday

I realized that I could list 30 guys a night when the NHL has full schedules. I am going to try and tone this down to the top ten players for the next night. As always, roto is a numbers game and you see the best results by doing it every night. If you snagged Hagman for last night or Hlinka you were rewarded. If you got McGrattan for PIMs you were left wanting. Its playing the percentages and sticking to it to insure you get results for the week.

My ten adds for Friday Oct. 5th:

Niklas Hagman (DAL-LW) With a goal and assist vs COL he has started off hot. BOS has a hurting Dcore and are pron to giving up goals and SHG. Points, PIMs, SHPs, SOG.

Milan Lucic (BOS-LW) The kid knows he only has a small window to make this team for the year. I look for huge energy from him tomorrow and he should fight. PIMs, SOG.

Donald Brashear (WSH-LW) There was some bad blood last season between these teams. I am not sure who Brashear will fight, but the odds are good he finds someone. PIMs.

Paul Gausted (BUF-C) He will get PP time in front of the net. PPPs, SOG, Points.

Dennis Wideman (BOS-D) He will be playing some PP point. He has 2G in 6games vs Dallas. PPPs, Points, SOG, PIMs.

Sean O'Donnell (ANH-D) ANH will be looking to take out their 1-2 record on CLS. +/-, PIMs.

Nicklas Bergfors (NJD-RW) He might not be owned in your league yet. Playing PP and top 6 minutes he should be a good play for points, SOG.

Travis Moen (ANH-LW) I picked him over Parros because Moen can fight, gets SOG and has a chance at points. I have no problem with Parros for PIMs. Moen for a shot at points, SOG, +/-, PIMs, SHPs.

Maxime Talbot (PIT-C) Assuming Armstrong, Christensen and Malone are taken, Talbot is the best shot at SHPs, SOG and points. He also can drop the gloves for PIMs.

Antti Miettinen (DAL-RW) Miettinen looked good last night playing with Modano and Morrow. He is a good play v BOS for a shot at goals, SOG, assists.

Thats ten ideas. Roto is most effective using Dmen on full nights. Most teams have full forwards but you can always find good Dmen to play for matchups. You can find good forwards/centers as well, but are you going to want to play a matchup over a proven PPG guy? On defense its much easier to replace via roto. There are few elite Dmen worth full time roster spots. The rest are very similar and you can get more stats from 7 games a week than you can 4.

Good luck tonight!

Don't play the victim

The season is barely started and already we have some victims. I am not talking about the dreaded injury bug. I am talking about guys that are victims of coaching, bad line combos and just plan bad ice. These are guys you should bench (if you have a better option that night) until they start getting better ice and line mates.

Alexander Frolov (LA-LW) As a Frolov owner, I had no idea what the Kings were doing bringing in Nagy and Calder in the summer. Calder I could see, but Nagy didn't make much sense given the players they had. This spelled trouble in my eyes. I was prepared for Frolov to have a down season. I own Frolov in my keeper and I maintain if he wants to he could be a 50 goal scorer. I didn't see that happening this season. I was ready to hold him and not panic.I knew I would not trade him if he started slow or had a bad season. LA is insistent on making Dustin Brown into a quality NHL player. They are willing to do this at the expense of Frolov. Brown got PP time last year when he should not have and he hurt Frolov's production. I saw that being the case this year and it is. Frolov saw some PP time, but he was basically invisible in stints. He was put on a shut down line and he didn't even get that key PK time that has made him a great fantasy player for all pools. Frolov could be getting prepped by management for a trade and he is not getting the ice he needs (just two games I know) to produce at a high level. I know Handzus looked great with Havlat last season, but that was for 8 games? He is still frigging, Handzus people. Not exactly a goto fantasy stud. Frolov looks lost in LA right now and until he finds his way don't play him over other talent. Be patient with him and don't undersell in keepers. Single season pools you can trade away and try to find someone that will be more consistent this season.

Andrei Kostitsyn (MTL-LW) Shift #1 with Grabovski and Kovalev looked magical. Then CAR shut them down. They made some fancy passes but were not a high risk line. I love Kostitsyn but I don't like that line. Kostitsyn also failed to get the PP time he should for a passer of his talent. Don't play this victim over more proven talent on nights your schedule is full. This might only take a game or two to fix in Montreal.

Dominic Moore (MIN-C) No, there is no Steve joke coming here. Dominic was the victim of his own teammate. When the MIN coach said Moore could center the top line Gaborik said "No way". Moore was the victim and won't get cheap points as a result.

Nigel Dawes (NYR-LW) Dawes put up some preseason numbers and looks decent on the scoring wing. Many Ranger fans were calling for him to play on the top line over Hossa. Dawes had one thing working against him. Jagr didn't want to play with him. Jagr gets what Jagr wants. Dawes was sent down and victimized by his teammate.

Antoine Vermette (OTT-C/LW) Vermette looked great last night and he did produce. If the coach buries him with Kelly each game he won't be the breakout player so many predicted. Play him if you have space but until he gets better ice don't bench a proven PPG guy for him.

Steve Reinprecht (PHX-C) PHX will start with Hanzal and Mueller on the 3rd and 4th lines. But they will be getting PP time with Doan. Even if Reinprecht gets line 1 5on5 he is a victim without PP time.

Steve Bernier (SJS-RW) While many are hoping this is the year this big and talented power forward puts it all together, he is starting out with a low line position. I know in SJS they swap lines around in game but its not a solid sign to start. Bernier is the victim of the coaches wanting to look at Setoguchi and Mitchell. Bernier could be getting passed by by other prospects and until he shows signs of life he should be benched in favor of proven producers.

That kicks off the first column. We will be bringing you more of these victims as the season moves along. We will also be coming out with one that lists the players that broke the cycle of being the victims.

Q & A Segment 10/03/07

Tonight we get a little more meat on our NHL plate. Thought I would toss out a fats Q&A. Not many questions. I am starting to think no one loves me because of my Kalus love.

Hank
Toskala or Raycroft tonight vs Ottawa?

Hank, see the tonights goalie section. Raycroft is in tonight. Toskala will likely play tomorrow unless Raycroft gets a SO. LOL!

Anonymous
Vanilla or Chocolate with a side of Strawberry?

I am a vanilla guy. or vanilla with some maple syrup on it.

Nathan in Utah
Who will have the bigger year? Bernier-Setoguchi?

Nathan, Setoguchi is the buzz name on SJS fans lips but I like Bernier for this season. I like his size and they will give him a chance to break out. If he does not break out he could be traded, but I like him this year slightly over Setoguchi.

Jim
I see you are high on Mark Bell. He was not drafted in my league. Should I add him? If yes who should I drop from the following?

Gelinas, Dumont, Bergfors, Torres

Jim, Gelinas is the safest drop there. I would wait on Bell until he has served 10-12 games of the 15 suspension. Then he is definitely worth a look over Gelinas.

Wes Walz
I turned 57 yesterday and for my birthday I get to skate on the top line. Will I have any value in fantasy or will I hurt Gaborik and Demitra?

Wes, happy birthday! 57 is a nice age for production. You are not worth a long time add and I don't see you sticking on the top line. I would recommend using you for match up plays and you should certainly add yourself to play against CHI tomorrow!

Nick in Michigan
I have been offered Mike Comrie and Lee Stempniak in my standard scoring keeper. The manager wants Tim Connolly and Marek Svatos in return. Comrie has looked good in preseason. I have no idea about Stempniak. Should I do this since both my guys are injury risks?

Nick, It is hard to give up Connolly when he has the potential to produce huge numbers. However, I think you have to do it. This is a fair deal and Svatos was in the dog house most of last year. He is starting on the 4th line tonight and while he could get PP time and is a big time goal scorer, Stempniak can get you better overall stats. Do this deal. Comrie could be huge this year.

Thats it fluffers. Keep them rolling. Enjoy tonights games!

Match ups for Thur 10/04/07

Here is who you should roto in for Thursday.

Mark Parrish (MIN-RW) MIN will score some goals on CHI and Parrish is a guy that might score two. He also will see PP2 time and might get some SOG.

Brian McGrattan (OTT-RW) If you didn't get him for tonight then add him for tomorrow. Playing TOR B2B should mean a fight or two. PIMs

Wade Belak (TOR-D) If he is not in the line up tonight and TOR gets pushed around he will be in tomorrow night to fight. PIMs

Chris Kelly (OTT-C) A solid play for SHPs and a general shot at all stats (PPPs unlikely)

Chad Kilger (TOR-LW) He has been sharp in preseason and he seems to play well against OTT. He is a good match up for points, SHPs and PIMs.

Nik Antropov (TOR-C)
Antropov will be playing the wing to Sundin and has Blake on the other side. With Ant's size and that lines skill he should be a lock for points/ppps. Managers stay away from him because of injuries. He should be available in most leagues.

Nick Foligno (OTT-LW) He didn't just make the 4th line, he is starting out on line two and Yahoo added him to their player list. He is a solid snag for all around stats.

Jaroslav Hlinka (COL-C) Slated to play line 2 he has produced in the preseason and is not owned in many leagues. Points, SOG. VS Nashville could be a good match up.

Ian Laperriere (COL-RW) He is set to play with Wolski and Arnason. He likes to fight against Nashville too. Points, PIMs, a couple SOG.

Tyler Arnason (COL-C) He had a good season for COL last year and he is not owned in most leagues. With a goal scorer like Wolski to pass to and Laperriere top create space look to him for assists, ppps and SOG. VS Nashville could be a good match up.

Jordan Tootoo (NSH-RW) He could fight VS COL for sure. PIMs.

Vernon Fiddler (NSH-C) Slated for line two duty he could be a good pick up for SOG, points, SHPs.

Torrey Mitchell (SJS-C) He will center line 2 with Michalek and Setoguchi. Good chance at points.

Derek Boogaard (MIN-RW) VS CHI always a nice shot at PIMs.

Marcel Hossa (NYR-LW) Line 1. He could score some goals get some assists.

Yanic Perreault (CHI-C) Goals. Face off wins if you have that in your categorizes.

Jasom Williams (CHI-C) With injuries he is a good play for PPPs and points.

Rene Bourque (CHI-LW) A third liner, CHI is short on LWs and he could get good minutes. PIMs, points.

Daniel Carcillo (PHX-LW) He should be gone in PIM leagues, but points and PIMs if he is there.

Doug Weight (STL-C) any STL player available is a good play vs PHX. goals, assists, ppps for weight.

There are many more. This should be enough for night two. I might add more through the day.

More rookies

There are a few more rookies you might want to think about for your team. These guys have made their clubs and will get a start in the top 6. If they stick or not is a long shot, but they will be worth a shot for their first couple of games.

Mason Raymond (VAN-LW/RW) Raymond had a great camp and he will be getting a shot with the Sedin Twins to open his NHL career. Raymond has big offensive upside despite not being drafted. VAN is short on guys like him so he could stick on the top line.

Torrey Mitchell (SJS-C) Setoguchi has gotten all the press in fantasy but the other rookie making this club will be his center. Mitchell is hard working and has 2nd line scoring center upside. So much so he has bypassed everyones favorite, over hyped, Pavelski. Mitchell will start out centering Setoguchi and Michalek. Seto should be owned in your league but Mitchell likely slipped through. Get them both if you can.

Nick Foligno (OTT-LW) I have talked about him enough. But I still am throwing him in because of my man crush. I had to have a crush on someone while waiting for Kalus's NHL return.

Tobias Enstrom (ATL-D) He will get PP point time and with that talent around him he should get healthy assist totals.

James Sheppard (MIN-C) Its MIN so don't expect mega points from this 19 year old. He will be brought along slowly but he could see nice streaks playing with Gaborik in spots this season.

Milan Lucic (BOS-LW) He is likely up for just a 9-10 game tryout. He did make the club though and his style means he could be a nice add for a couple games to get PIMs and maybe some points. He might even force BOS to keep him all year.

Mikhail Gabovski (MTL-C) This highly skilled offensive center will start out between Kovalev and Kostitsyn. The points could come in bunches but that line is high risk when it comes to +/-.

Jaroslav Hlinka (COL-C) No one will accuse me of age discrimination. This 30+ year old rookie will get top 6 minutes in COL to start. If he can be consistent enough to stay there is a question mark. He should put up some points his first two games and warrant a look.

Starting Goalies 10/03/07

Too Old to Rock and Roll

Too Old to Rock and Roll, I love this classic Jethro Tull song. I thought of it when I was trying to think of tonights post idea. I was thinking of the older players that are sometimes lost in the prospect rush that are keeper drafts. And I thought of guys forgotten about due to injuries or down years.

Some of these players might have went late in your drafts or could still be on the waiver wire in shallow leagues. Keep these names in mind. Maybe try to buy low on a few to stock up in deeper leagues.

Cory Stillman (CAR-LW) Stillman was just a lowly PPG player in Carolina until he got hurt. Last year was miserable on him and fantasy owners. He is back healthy and has talent to play with and a high octane offensive system. Stillman should be back to a PPG this season.

Bill Guerin (NYI-RW) There is no way Guerin should be available in PIM leagues, but if he is you pick him up. He also has cold spells so don't be afraid to buy low if he is in one. Guerin is a great source of goals, SOG and PIMs. Age does not hurt his game and he will get loads of PP time.

Petr Cajanek (C/LW for hire) On waivers, this overlooked player can chip in nicely on a team that is hungry for assists. If he lands on a new team he could pitch in right away. He was almost a PPG player after returning to the Blues from a waiver demotion last season. Keep an eye on him.

Martin Rucinsky (STL-LW) Rucinsky is a solid two way player who can put up some points. Keep an eye on his line pairings and his production. He could be a solid filler add if you have injuries.

Scott Walker (CAR-RW) Walkers numbers were down in Carolina last season after an injury shortened season in Nashville the year before. Walker can still score 20 goals. Play some PK and will get decent PP time. He also drops the gloves and is still capable of putting up 60PIMs or more.

Doug Weight (STL-C) Plenty of passing talent and I heard they just invented a walker with skates. He is golden! Weight has plenty of finishers to set up on the PP this year and is a solid pick up for assists and PP points. he has even shown some goal scoring finish in preseason.

Mike Sillinger (NYI-C/RW) He scored 26 goals and 33 assists last year to go with 46PIMs. That is not lighting the world on fire but if you need a plug in at center he always produces and is great in SHP leagues.

Jozef Stumpel (FLA-C) OK, I always pick on people when they add him. Thats true, but he does put up some good numbers in streaks. Not worth a full time spot by any means but if you time playing him right you can be well rewarded.

Craig Conroy (CGY-C) If he is hot he is a must add. This older player has some gas left in the tank. The question is how much? Nice fill in at C if you are hit with injuries and need SHPs.

I tried to target guys that might be available. Clearly there are a lot of older players getting it done. This are some that get overlooked at times.

Match ups for WED

A recap of the suggested players and a couple new ideas. Use those roto spots to gain the edge!

Travis Moen (ANH-LW) Already has a goal and 5 SOG. Decent matchups for points, PIMs, SHPs and SOG.

See the rest of the ANH players recommended this past weekend

Jaroslav Hlinka (COL-C)
Slated to play line 2 he has produced in the preseason and is not owned in many leagues. Points, SOG.

Ian Laperriere (COL-RW) He is set to play with Wolski and Arnason. He likes to fight against Dallas too. Points, PIMs, a couple SOG.

Tyler Arnason (COL-C) He had a good season for COL last year and he is not owned in most leagues. With a goal scorer like Wolski to pass to and Laperriere top create space look to him for assists, ppps and SOG.

Niklas Hagman (DAL-LW) Gritty. Points, PIMs, SHPs, a couple SOG.

Antti Miettinen (DAL-RW) SOG and points. He is a streaky player and can put up goals anytime he is on the ice. He can also vanish in games so he is more of a gamble play.

The biggest lock for a match up is Brian McGrattan (OTT-RW). This monster of a man is fired up over Downie and with TOR on the schedule expect him to get his fight on. He is my PIM lock of the week.

Wade Belak (TOR-D) - Belak is not a lock to play, but he always fights McGrattan. You can add him and hope. I will update on Tuesday. PIMs

George Parros (ANH-RW) - ANH plays DET on Wednesday so if you already picked up Parros for the LA games just hold on to him. PIMs

Tomas Kopecky (DET-RW) - This kid has grit and might even have some hands. PIMs, long shot for points. I can see him fighting a number of guys on ANH, which means he is bound to fight once.

Matt Cullen (CAR-C) - In deeper leagues he should not be on the wire. If he is on your wire he is a solid play for points vs MTL. He can also get a SHP and SOG.

Updates Tonight

I will be working on some other things today and won't get to updates until later tonight.

Be sure to check out the Cheese Move for match up ideas and be sure to set your lineups for tomorrows games!

The Arrogant Puck

Hey, Listen up Hoser Cats. I'm here to tell you that most (hear that Garth Snow) NHL rosters are set for the 2007-2008 season, at least for now. Now, you don't have to be smarter than a typing llama that cn't sepll to know that NHL rosters are one of the most fluid in pro sports. That means we can mine gold on the waiver wire and mine it well. Here's a list of players that didn't make it out of training camp, but are worth keeping an eye on this year. In deeper keeper leagues and farm systems, these guys should already be owned if for some stroke of luck they aren't already --pick them up!!.

T.J. Hensick (C) Col
- This kid turned it on last year in Michigan, and had one of the best
preseasons on record, only to fall to the knife. But keep an eye on him, because as soon as one of the injury prone Avs gets hurt (cough, cough, Svatos' shoulder; cough, cough, Brunette's appendages; cough, cough Wolski's head) , he's going to get his chance to shine.

Nigel Dawes (LW) NYR
- I'm starting to think this kid will be the next Hamel or Haydar -
Kings of the AHL but not able to cut it in the big leagues. If one of the top 9 forwards goes down, or gets on Renney's bad side, expect Nigel to be the first player called up.

Benoit Pouliot (LW)
- Lemaire loves him. That is all you need to know. Read up on what he had to
say, brings tear to your eye: "To be very honest, Pouliot, I didn't know what he was giving at the start," Lemaire said. "I tried to see something, but the only thing I saw was great talent and nothing else. But lately, I have to say that this kid, I got so much confidence that he's going to play -- and be good."... It's tough we couldn't keep him, OK? It's hard, because he's taking off. But he's going to be in good hands down in the minors." And there is always the chance that he won't be there too long. "He was in a dark room, very dark, until a little more than a week ago," Lemaire said. "Now -- and this is exactly what I told him, I said, 'Now you know what I think? I think you'll be a player.' " Lemaire would much rather play Pouliot on the top line than Sheppard, so keep that in mind and keep Obi-Wan Pouliot on your short list.

Derick Brassard (C) Clb
- I don't like him, but most do. He's on the short list to be called up when
old man Federov gets hurt again, or they somehow trade Zherdev for value.

Kris Letang (D) Pit - Everyone thought Letang was a lock to make it this year. He shocked the world! - by stinking in preseason. But not all is lost, an injury or two and he'll be back up with the big club.

Igor Grigorenko (RW) Det
- Igor learned the hardway that sometimes things get lost in translation.
A few years back he was trying to decipher an article about Tkachuk eating too many doughnuts in the offseason, showing up to camp too fat and slow, and then having a horrible season. It turns out, his english was a bit off and he somehow thought that was how North American's train for hockey. So.....He's off to the AHL at least for a bit. But he won't be there long - either he'll get called back up in Detroit OR he'll move back to Russia - his contract is too big in Russia to ignore compared to the dollars' he's making in the AHL. Either way, he's worth holding til we find out what happens. The good news is, he moved his family over here and was apartment shopping. So at least he thinks he is staying.

Cam Barker (D) Chi - personally, I wouldn't touch a Dman in Chicago until they prove themselves. Every year they say it will be different, and every year they suck. And now, Havlat is screwing with my 10 game prediction by being hurt already!!!! So, if you're one of the last 3 season ticket holders in Chicago, keep an eye on Cam Barker. All others can safely ignore him for 5-10 years.

Chris Conner (RW) Dal
- Listen, I don't even know who this is. However, he had a great pre-season,
the management loves him (not enough to keep him up though), and Dallas really really really needs to score some goals. So, if their offense stinks the way we know it can, Conner's worth a gamble as much as anyone.

Claude Giroux (RW) Phi - sadly, Claude can't be called up. However, he's going to be an amazing player and I just wanted to start training you to like him.

That's it, I'm outta here.

Todays Cheese Slices

Some more Match up players for Wednesday night's games.

Jaroslav Hlinka (COL-C) Slated to play line 2 he has produced in the preseason and is not owned in many leagues. Points, SOG.

Do they make your cut?

There were some surprise names that made the NHL cuts. Will these guys make the cut on your fantasy team?

Nick Foligno (OTT-LW) Foligno has done everything the coaches have asked and has been a scoring machine in the preseason. He is even slated to start out on line two with Eaves and Fisher to start the season. He has decent potential because of the team and his work ethic. I have him in my deep keeper and he is worth a look in deep leagues. He could even get a shot with Heater and Spezza. I think this because everyone else has been given the chance too!

Sam Gagner (EDM-C) Gagner will get a look to start the season and the rest is up to him. He could be worth locking up in keeper leagues if you need to rebuild. I would not expect over 40 points for him this season.

Andrew Cogliano (EDM-C) Cogliano will be given a chance to carry some of the offensive load for EDM. Like Gagner I think 40 points is a reasonable possibility.

Carey Price (MTL-G) Montreal is a circus right now. I am not sure that this kid can handle the way Montreal chews up people and spits them out. He is the real deal as far as skill and if you have Huet you better get this kid for insurance. He is also a great keeper league snag.

Mikhail Grabovski (MTL-C) If he clicks with Kovalev and Kostitsyn, look out. Worth keeping an eye on.

Mason Raymond (VAN-RW) He has speed to spare and is a physical player. He could find a scoring touch and put that with hard work and PIMs. He is worth keeping an eye on. You never know who might end up with the Sedin twins.

Adam Hall (PIT-RW) Does he have size and grit? Yes. Does he have the ability to score 20 goals? Yes. Should you pick him up becuase he plays in PIT? No.

Q & A Segment 9/30/07

The last Q&A of September! Bring on some October hockey!

Thomas in Sweden
I have a question for you about some young defensemen. I dropped Tobias Enström but now I'm thinking about picking him up again, but then I don't know who I should drop. As of now my list of defensemen, including the farm team, looks like this:

Ed Jovanovski
Christian Ehrhoff
Niklas Kronwall
Sami Salo (IR)
Mike Green
Brent Seabrook
Cam Barker
Kris Letang
Kris Russell

Thomas, I have never been a Kronwall fan because of his injuries and DET depth. Salo is also easily replaced when he comes off IR. I wouold say one of those two. I also think Mike Green will be behind Enstrom this season and for his career in points. I would try and trade Jovo while he is healthy. You might be able to make room that way. I know Jovo is capable of being a fantasy monster, but he is always hurt and the PHX blueline is deep with good PP dmen.

Oleg
Is Carcillo the real deal or a preseason fluke?

Oleg, Carcillo is a little of both right now. He won't score at the rate he did in preseason, but he will be capable of 30-40 points to go with his monster PIM total. If Carcillo gets PP time and keeps his confidence up, he puts in the hard work to get up to 50 points. But thats shooting a little high.

Sam
Sheppard, PMB or Mikko? I only have room for one.

Sam, because of the way Lemaire uses youth I would steer away from Sheppard this season. If you are in a keeper I like Shep over the other two. Single season pool I would go with PMB or Mikko. They will both get similar numbers so pick one based on position. If you need a wing take PMB if you need a center take Mikko. (PMB is ofter a C/RW in Yahoo so that could give you flexibility)

Frank in NJ
Some guy in my pool just picked up Bergfors and tried to trade him to me for Satan. He knows I am from NJ and is trying to move me the home town boy. Should I trade a drafted player for the guy this clown just picked up?

Frank, assuming this is a single season pool, No. Satan will have the better season. If it is a keeper and you want long term and you like NJ players, Bergfors could be a good one. I can see Bergfors struggling to find consistence this year and you being able to get him cheap when Langenbrunner gets back to the line up.

Anonymous
Some guy offered me Steve Bernier and Nick Zherdev for Corey Perry after todays game. Should I take this deal or would that be crazy?

This depends on your needs. Bernier and Zherdev are too much of a wild card for me to move Perry for. I would not take that deal. Whoever you find to play with Perry will be greater than Bernier and Z. Bernier could break out this season but its not starting to hot for him.

Thats all I got for this batch. Keep them coming!

Zetterberg the new Havlat?

Henrik Zetterberg (DET-LW) has world class talent. Lately though he has not been able to stay healthy.

Zetterberg was resting a bad back last season when H2H managers needed him most and he seems to have had the injury bug in his young career. OK< so nothing as extreme as Havlat. But I needed to get your attention. Since breaking into the NHL, Zetterberg has played in 79, 61, 77, 63 games.

There are rumors around DET that both his wrist and back are not 100% but when he is on the ice you would never know it. He is a top fantasy player if he can stay on the ice.

Zetterberg was slated to play in the B2B games vs TOR. He was dynamic in game one but decided to sit out game two to rest a slight hand injury. His coach said it was nothing and since it was preseason there was no sense in pushing it. Very true words, but its left some grumbling it could be his wrist again.

Zetts is not Havlat and his injuries should be gone by this season or hopefully next. The back is a worry but if you have the chance to trade for him, DO IT!

If Zetterberg starts out hurt, slow or a manager looks like they might panic you should jump on the chance to land this player. He is the type of player that is magical to watch and that can put up huge fantasy stats.

Kostitsyn will lead MTL in scoring

I have been high on Andrei Kostitsyn (MTL-LW) for a long time. After seeing him register 6 SOG last night and netting a goal to go with an assist I am on cloud nine.

Montreal has struggled to score and they desperately need someone to help. Kostitsyn is not messing around. He is working hard and making it so if he is not given line 1 ice time, then the coach should be fired. (I threw that in for the Montreal fans. They want everyone fired)

Kostitsyn has all the tools to be a PPG+ player and if he is given the ice in MTL I have no doubt he will be their leading scorer.

Kostitsyn will increase the value of whatever linemates he ends up with. He is an excellent passer and holds tremendous vision.

Igor bring me a goal

In Frankenstein, Igor had to bring lots of stuff to the Doctor. In this story it was Igor that had to be fixed up by the Doctor.

Igor Grigorenko (DET-LW/RW) Has not looked good this season. If its due to his past injuries or not is quesionable. I had my eye on him for my keeper and admit taking him much sooner than I would have liked due to Yahoo putting out "he could score 48 goals this year". While I have said on this site that was a long shot I still wanted to lock up Igor for down the road. With Yahoo predicting him near the top of league leaders in goals I knew someone would take him high.

Igor has seen limited ice in the preseason and at times has looked completely lost out there. The best sign he showed was last night at the end of the game. TOR was taking liberties with DET players. Especially Chad Kilger (TOR-LW) on smaller players. After Igor got an elbow to the head he slashed the player. Got up and starting taking cheap shot punches at everything in blue. Igor received 29 PIMs for this at the end of the game and the coaches for DET were laughing. It might be the most spunk he has shown since coming to North America.

I have said before that Igor will likely see time in the AHL this season, but if he does or doesn't won't matter. Igor will be brought along slow in DET. 5 on 5 ice will be very rare and he might get some PP2 time. If he starts to show signs through the year he might get rewarded with icetime.

Don't give up on him in keepers no matter how bad it looks now. He will pay off in the long run.

Fiddler is no longer on the roof

Vernon Fiddler (NSH-C) is on line 2 to start the season. He will get looks there at RW. The talented center has shown offensive flashes in the past and will get a chance at a key scoring role.

If you are in deep pools you should keep an eye on Fiddler. He should not offer much value in single season pools except riding a hot streak.

Kalus sent down, Sheppard signed.

This is a dark day for me. My boy that I have been pimping since last year has hit the dreaded MIN youth snag.

With the teams signing of James Sheppard they moved Kalus down to the AHL. Sheppard was not eligible to go to the NHL because of his age. Sheppard would have to go back to juniors if not inked. So MIN inked him.

Kalus will be up when there is an injury or he will be up if someone is not performing. He has to go to the AHL and bust his hump because if he hides his tail the coaches will not reward him. He can ask Volosenko about that.

Kalus was a lock for a top 6 spot in Boston and will have to earn his shot in MIN. The kid did everything the coaches asked and worked hard in camp. He was one of the few players that was spoke highly about daily. I just don't understand this move, but managers should not panic. He is still a great keeper and will get a chance this season.

Picks for Wednesday

I will get a much more complete list on Tuesday, but I figured I would list a few from now and each day leading up to the full list Tuesday.

I will be adding a few each day and putting out the complete list on Tuesday. Keep checking back.

Starting Goalies 9/30/07

There has been no official word on the starters. Given they are in London some of the sources I count on to scout practices have not been available.

I'm going with:

Jonas Hiller ANH VS Jason LaBarbera LA Kings

Bryzgalov could get the start here but since DET plays on the road WED I think they will want to keep him fresh. Crawford mentioned wanting to keep fresh guys but Bernier is only 19 and they don't play again until next Saturday.

Bottom line, you should not have many choices of who to start or bench. Start them if you've got them. If you happen to have all four I would lean toward Hiller and L'Barb.
